Product Description

Product Description

This title investigates the work of image-makers whose craft occupies the space somewhere between graphic design and fine art and whose tools are increasingly those of a digital medium. Featuring the full range of contemporary approaches to illustration, "Pen and Mouse" defines the innovative areas practice: from artists working by hand to those producing purely digital art work, or hybrid forms combining digital and traditional media. The book outlines the effect that technology has had on commercial artists, and demonstrates this with the work of over 40 illustrators from around the world, reflecting vastly differing styles. The contributors comment on their motivation and working methods, and give their views on the role of technology and its effect on their work.

Designers and advertisers launch a relentless tirade of ideas aimed to attract our attention. Pen and mouse is a compilation of illustrators' works of varying style, including a mini-interview in e-mail-style format, and a passport-sized self portrait of each artist, all of which form easily-read, entertaining dialogues. Rather than an analytical approach, text is minimal -and thus subliminal- to allow the reader to draw their own conclusions, as the drawings speak for themselves. The book seems as though viewed for the first time everytime it is picked up and in this way, reflects vibrancy in keeping with its artistic intentions. It's almost like a glorious magazine - recommended, especially for inspirational purposes and an insight into media culture.

This book showcases an eclectic compilation of some the most talent illustrators in the world today who use digital processes in creating their work. There is a brief interview with each featured illustrator focussing mainly on their process, which is followed by a small collection of their favourite work. If a criticism could be made it would be that maybe the focus is on featuring many illustrators rather than a comprehensive look at a few, but that besides this book is a joy to look at and shows a diverse range of styles. A definite must for illustration fans and contemporary illustrators. Inspirational.
