This pen is a beauty - not just because it looks good but because it writes so smoothly. The gold plated steel nib (fine in my case) glides across the page AND if you reverse the nib and write with what used to be the top of the nib you have an extra fine nib - this may not be so for every 'fine' nib but it is certainly the case for my one. The ink flow is well controlled whichever way up the nib is.

It does not, and cannot, use a cartridge. Ink is drawn up into the barrel chamber, via an internal piston, by twisting the cap on the end - anti-clockwise to move the piston down the cylinder, then clockwise to draw the ink in from your bottle. A little dab with a cloth / soft tissue to clean any surplus ink off the nib / finger holding area and you're ready to write for two to three times longer than possible with any cartridge.

You will need to buy some ink in a bottle for your pen. Pelikan makes a good range of inks, some in a fancy bottle with a pen rest, as does English ink maker Diamine. I have tried both makes in mine; Brilliant Black from Pelikan which provides a really black black, and Diamine's Steel Blue which is a bright full blue/turquoise colour that seems to flow like silk off the nib. Diamine has a massive range of colours that are readily available from the internet. Their inks have a world wide reputation and they are generally cheaper per ml than other inks of comparable quality.

A VERY, VERY good feature of the Mxxx series of Pelikan pens is that there is semi-transparent 'ink window', about a centimetre in size, at the bottom of the barrel near the grip area. When the cap is off this 'window' allows for a very quick check of your ink level without dismantling your pen - just hold it with the point upward and hold in front of any light area.

I bought this pen for myself as I only use a fountain pen to write with. I used it for some exams I had to take and am very pleased with the item. It has a superb flow, brilliantly crafted nib and an easy ergonomic design which is pleasing to the eye and easy on the grip. I paid £47 for the pen, which is far less than what one pays for a lot of less good pens. The delivery of the product from Amazon was late and not satisfactory, though within the promised time albeit on the very last day of their expected delivery span.

A very satisfied customer.

A very nice pen as an introduction to the Pelikan range.

Beautifully finished, this is a classic design that just does what it was designed to do ...... write impeccably whilst looking smart and timeless. The pen is relatively small and works best with the cap posted on the end of the barrel. The nib can easily be changed or even upgraded if you desire.
