I have been cake decorating on and off for a few years now, but have been mostly relegated to doing novelty birthday cakes for my children nowadays!

This book is gorgeous - it has inspired me to do some non child orientated cake decorating - and am now desperately trying to think of a reason to invite people for afternoon tea so I can make some of the fantastic fondant fancies and iced biscuits.

It is an inspiring book - if you're a beginner you will probably need to practice a little, but Peggy Porschen's book shows that glamorous and beautiful cakes (and cookies!) don't need to be saved just for special occasions. So I'm now off to order some edible lustre to make the Bollywood cakes.

Peggy Porschen's book is a joy to look at with it's many gorgeous photographs and certainly very inspirational. However, she makes things sound a little too easy at times. I tried the fondant fancies and when I dipped them into the icing, like she describes, the latter was full of crumbs afterwards. Regardless, the cakes taste wonderful and I love her style of decorating!

Beautiful cakes and beautiful book to look at.The recipes work well and the cakes taste delicious. As already noted many of the cakes are small ones and there is also a section on iced cookies. I found the UK prices for cookie cutters to be ridiculously high so I ordered them directly from the US, saving a huge amount of money.

I bought the book when it was first published and believe that is has been re-published so hope that the negative comments below have been resolved.

This could have been a fabulous book. The cakes are the most incredible I have seen in any book, the author has such an amazing eye for design and colour. It is well worth looking at this book once just for the inspiration, and envy her talents.

However, my problem is with the publishing house chosen. I wrote a letter to the author, care of the publishing house, pointing fifteen pages of mistakes that I noticed with two days of buying the book. Obviously, I didn't get a response and I doubt whether the author even saw the letter.

The photos were in the wrong order so they didn't correspond with the instructions; items were missing from the equipment photo (even a big gap on one photo that should have alerted people to the absence of equipment), ingredients and weight measurements missing from recipes etc. I am sure that you get the idea. All of these anomalies should have been spotted before going to print.

Peggy really needs to right a clause into any contract for future books giving her final approval before it goes to print.

Fabulous book, shame about the proof readers!

Peggy Porschens bright, colourful approach to cake decorating is a refreshing change from the old fashioned style of icing. I've tried 3 of the recipes/ideas from this book already, including the fondant fancies and the flowerpot cakes. I'd give this book a 5, but some of the techniques are still a little dificult for beginners, overall though she explains them well and the book is beautifully photographed. The basic cake mixtures are extremely good too, the fondant fancies tasted wonderful.
I'm going to try the magnificent rose cake next month for a friends birthday, I'm sure she'll be blown aways if I can make it look as good as Peggys!

This book is one of the most inspiring creative books I've bought in ages. It's like Cath Kidston meets Nigella Lawson. It was pricey for a kitchen book but will definitely be treasured. I bought it ahead of my daughter's third birthday party and made the most beautiful magical cake that tasted like nothing on earth. The cookies drew gasps from all - try splat cooking.co.uk for amazing cutters - and I can never go back to making un - iced biscuits or cakes again now I've seen how a piece of food can look like a work of art.
I spent a fair bit on cookie cutters after buying this - I have a HUGE collection to cover every occassion now - and on icing utensils, but once you've bought them you're set up for life. Like another reviewer, I'm writing this hoping that not too many people buy the book because it's so amazing you want to keep it to yourself so everyone that comes to your home thinks you're the creative genius- not Peggy Porschen. Hide this book at parties.

Excellent book .. Existing new style cakes, simple and beautiful, an inspiration for cake and cookie decorating!!!
Peggy go's through the basics then moves on to Cookies, Cup Cakes, Miniature cakes and Large cakes, with a handy section at the end with templates and a list of suppliers.
Techniques very, and she explains them well, although some piping skills would be an advantage. The ideas are contemporary and with a cake or cookie that can be used for every occasion, form Charismas to Valentines Day.
I recommend this book to those of you looking for contemporary ideas for small cakes and cookies.

I received this book as a birthday present recently and think it's fantastic! I do cake decorating as a hobby and the cakes in this book look great but are not too difficult to do. It is also one of those books you can just pick up and enjoy looking at the pictures. There are not too many cake decorating tools that you need to buy and those that you do require are easily available. I found it easier to make my own templates for the biscuits from cardboard as the cutters are quite expensive. Overall a great book which I would highly recommed to amateur and professional cake decorators alike.
