3.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable ripping yarn, 10 Feb 2007

OK this is not a literary tour de force but the bottom line is I enjoyed this story. A previous reviewer seems to me to be overly critical over place names, editorial niceties etc. Escapist fiction should allow you to, for a short time at least, forget about the bills, the boss and the bank manager and for me The Pegasus Secret did just that. The measure of whether you consider a book 'good' or not is if you are prepared to lavish some of your hard earned on any other works the author produces, I have done just that.

1.0 out of 5 stars Iritating, 16 Sep 2006
By I. littlejohn "Iain Littlejohn" (Abingdon) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is one of the most annoying books I have read for a long time. The story itself was fine, basically a fairly standard romp chasing down lost relics, however the way it is written is distracting in the extreme.

Fundamentally the author (and his editor) are lazy and haven't checked their facts. A section of the book is set in England, but I would be surprised if Mr Loomis has ever been here, let alone to the scene of the events he describes.

For instance he says that there is a road in Oxford called the 'Abington Road', which should of course be 'Abingdon', Abington is in Cambridge. He also says that Christchurch College is off this mythical road, when it is in fact on St Aldates. Finally he makes a point of poking fun at the pronunciation of Magdalen which is 'maud-a-lin' not 'maudin'.

My particular prize for the most iritating piece of nonsense is the way his 'Jeeves-like' English character from Old Bond Street speaks, 'I help you or you jus' browsin'?'. I think P.G.Woodehouse is silently spinning beneath our feet somewhere.

For a story which is supposed to suspend your disbelief, so that you can lose yourself in a conspiracy theory, it fails at the first hurdle with so many easily verifiable facts being woefully inaccurate.

So, if you're planning to read this one I wouldn't bother (try Steve Berry - same sort of stuff but better writtent). If you're Mr Loomis or his editor, please give you readers a bit of credit and do at least some basic research next time.
