The multi award-winning and critically acclaimed comedy returns to DVD for a fifth series. Peep Show continues to delve into the innermost thoughts of Mark (David Mitchell) - the conventional one seething with inner rages and desires - and Jeremy (Robert Webb) - the loose cannon full of expressed rages and desires - but seething with even more rage on the inside.

Mark and Jeremy are entering their 30s with failed marriages behind them, few prospects, and a sense of impending crisis. Time is running out for them to sort out their lives. Jeremy’s mother appears on the scene and it soon becomes clear why he’s ended up as he is. Mark goes speed dating, and discovers money can buy you love. Jeremy and Superhans (Matt King) play at a Christian Rock Festival; the flat suffers multiple burglaries and the boys endure their worst ever night out – at the theatre.

Extras:

Synopsis

The fifth series of the gloriously un-PC comedy PEEP SHOW finds Mark and Jeremy returning from Mark's honeymoon in Mauritius and into the aftermath of his wedding day 'jilting'. As Mark is thrown reluctantly back into the dating scene--with predictably cringe-worthy results--Jeremy's lack of cash sees him turning back to his mother. The show's refreshing lack of 'lessons being learnt' and characters 'growing up and moving on' is present as ever, with Sophie, Jeff, Big Suze and Johnson all returning to complicate matters further.
What makes PEEP SHOW stand out from the comedy pack is its finely honed script and strong lead performances by David Mitchell and Robert Webb. The fact that viewers are able to hear the innermost thoughts of Mark and Jeremy as they encounter various problems makes their characters all the more vulnerable, sympathetic and often just plain pathetic. The result is a well-observed comedy for anyone who spends life at the mercy of their own hesitant thoughts.

All too often a great comedy series starts to turn stale because it ran for one or two series longer than it should have done. The last series of Red Dwarf left a bitter taste in the mouth, whereas Spaced left it at two series and finished on a high.

Peep Show has gone on for perhaps two series more than most would have expected, but more surprisingly, it's still better than most of the other stuff on telly.

From the very first episode you know that this hasn't lost any of the magic. This series maintains the high quality of writing we've come to expect from Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain. There are points on this DVD release where I've had to rewind back a few moments to re-experience some lines which had me in stitches. It's not very often that I laugh out loud at the screen and have to rewatch bits, but because the characters are so familiar, and the delivery is perfect, you really appreciate the genius behind the show.

As with the previous series, the joke is very much on Mark. He tends to finish up more down-trodden with each episode. His life seems to become more tragic as he is mocked, exploited, and left to philosophise on where he is headed. Mark is very much the star of series 5 with Jeremy making less of an appearance than usual. And this seems fair considering that Mark has spent the 4 series before this chasing Sophie, only to jilt her at (or rather, just after) the alter before this series began.

There's an added 'will they, won't they' thing going on with the only serious story arc of the series - female office geek Dobby, and with any other SitCom you'd be guaranteed a predictably happy ending. But with Peep Show you never know what's going to happen. It's the realism in the midst of outrageous scenarios which help this stand out. You can't help but have affection, and identify with the characters because they're so real.

You don't finish watching this series thinking that it looks tired. You watch the credits on the last episode roll and realise that you feel more endeared to the characters than ever before, it leaves you wanting more.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Oh Yes, She's The One", 7 Jun 2008

David Mitchell and Robert Webb are back for the fifth instalment of Peep Show, an award winning show in first person style filming. With Mark leaving Soph jilted at the alter, and Jez trying desperately to get his ex back, what a treat we had in line for series 5?

This series we see Mark trying to finally divorce Soph, and make a play for a geeky co-worker, known as "Dobbie", who loves first person role playing games and anything IT really, sounds perfect for Mark doesn't it?

Jez is trying hard to get a record deal: but with Superhans being the way he is, and them not actually being that good, means that the future isn't bright for these two, so he has to seriously consider his future.

Soph's still very upset about Mark leaving her, and even has a few flings, including co-workers and people Mark knows.

This isn't a bad series, but it's not as good as the past series to me. The storylines are good - but they keep ending too conveniently for the length of the episode, or sometimes you get the feeling they're unsure about whether series 6 will go ahead, or if they'll get wrong and die hard fans will be annoyed. The series does work well, but at times you wish they'd stick with a storyline, like Dobbie finally going out with Mark, but you do wonder, does he really just want Soph anyway?

The extras on this look good, a behind the scenes with the boys and girls of Peep Show; the Peep Show relationship tree, which maps every relationship there has been in Peep Show from episode 1 of series 1. There's also Soph's POV, which are scenes filmed in her point of view, which will apparently make up series 6, not sure how that works, maybe C4 have given them another series? There's also deleted scenes, which should be a treat in itself.

This DVD is well worth getting if you like Peep Show, as it's very funny, especially Mark's comments and the way he goes about things. I still think this show is great, and that it's one of the best British situational comedies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever, cutting edge comedy... as before., 25 Nov 2008
I can't believe that I was put off buying this at full price because of some of the reviews I read here. I loved the other series of Peep Show, and didn't want to see this one falter. After waiting for such a long time for it to come down in price, I'm annoyed at the over-critical ratings of some reviewers.

This is just as cleverly written as previously - in fact, I don't see what yardstick people are using to compare them. The writing style is similar to other series because it is the same characters and writers which have worked so well before (do they want another Only Fools and Horses disaster where they win the lottery or something?), but the situations, dialogue and story-lines are all as completely original as series 2,3 and 4.

If you liked the others, get this DVD - I doubt you'll be as disappointed as some of these reactionary reviewers seem to have been.
