The john peel show gave the chance for the Slits to be heard when no record company wanted to know them, I had a cassette of this recorded from the radio for years, this obviously predates the also excellent Cut but has raw power the Slits at their very best

TWO CLASSIC SESSIONS! 31 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
In 1977 and 1978, The Slits did these two sessions for John Peel's Radio 1 programme, reproduced here in their entirety. Peel swore they were two of the best sessions he ever had. The Slits wre four women who made a naive yet compelling noise. This was at the time of punk and a diy attitude to music. Significantly they are captured here before they began to refine their sound under producer Dennis Bovell. It is a raw sound but one with great spirit and charm. Note: there was a further Peel session in 1981, not featured here, but made available on a later disc.

A GREAT PLACE TO START 28 Dec 1999

The import version of The Slit's Peel Sessions includes various radio sessions which highlight many of their best moments. The versions of "FM" and "New Town" are far superior here than the Cut LP. "Vindictive" is not available anywhere else and is a Slits punk classic! This import also features versions of two tracks from their second LP "Return of the Giant Slits" ("Difficult Fun" and "Earthbeat") which is long out of print. The version of "In The Beginning" found here is a long drawn out jam which shouldn't be missed! BEWARE: There is a domestic Slits Peel Sessions also in print, but it is missing the three last tracks! This is probably my favorite SLITS record 5 Mar 2006

Most bands don't do much unique on Peel shows from what my ears have heard. Typically they're just recreating what they did in the studio for their records.

That's not the case w/ the SLITS. When I heard this record it took me places musically that the SLITS had never been before, certainly as a complete record.

The Cut first album is quite something. Course, that's assuming yer into the sound these gals made. It's not your usual stuff, punk or otherwise. Sure, they existed right in the fermament of the late 70's punk scene. But they carved out a musical place that is still only theirs.

This is an invaluable release because the SLITS released so few records. I'd recommend it in a heart beat, though I'd caution you to listen to those amazon 'listen' buttons first cuz this is not automatically going to be the group you just dig. We gotta find out if yer adventrous musically or not first. If you can get into their groove, man, they did some hot stuff and here's where they really get into it most. chrisbct@hotmail.com

No hint as to their true legacy and influence 17 July 2009

In The Rough Guide to Rock, it was said that the Slits more than any other band placed enthusiasm above musical credibility and that they made great music in spite of not being able to play.

Whilst this is certainly true of what they did on Cut, on these first recordings the Slits were a shrill and generic punk band without any of the distinctive rhythms that made "Cut" such an interesting listen. Ari Up on these early tracks has also failed to develop the piercing vocal style and sounds like she is trying to sing rock with the most extreme shrillness imaginable: a move that can only be described as a severe failure because she sounds as if she is singing without any melody and her effort to keep up with the noisy playing of Palmolive, Viv Albertine and Tessa Politt is ineffective. Although most of the songs on "The Peel Sessions" were later reworked for "Cut", the sound is nothing like that album and has been done far too many times before.

Even the three later tracks which come from the Return of the Giant Slits era have the same problem occasionally apparent even after the Slits showed they were much more than a generic punk band of failing to gel tightly enough to be memorable. In fact, they are less catchy than the overblown, sound of the early recordings here, which does them no credit at all.

If you really want to know why the Slits were genuinely influential on some of the best artists, female or otherwise, of the 1990s and 2000s you will not find out here.
