KJ always sounded good in session mode - the stripped-down raw mood really suited their songs.
Although this anthology naturally covers their early career, you couldn't wish for a better "alternative" take on some classic tracks. These are no lightweight versions either, and really stand alongside the studio versions.
For me standout track is "The Hum" - if there is a better more relentless grinding march towards the apocalypse then I've yet to hear it.
Buy this and play it loud.

A mixed bag? 12 Jan 2009

An essential addition to the collection of any Joker's collection. There's recordings from three Peel sessions from 1979 and 1981 and also a 1981 Richard Skinner session, so the CD covers the main songs from the group's first two albums.

The quality of the recording is good but somewhat sterile in comparison with the other recent release "Duende - The Spanish Sessions". Indeed where the latter CD presented a number of the groups songs in a very different light to the originals, the result of the Peel session recordings is a rather less ambitious "rehash" of the music. Although the tracks do differ from the album versions to a greater or lesser degree, they don't stand out as clearly as they might (or ought). For instance, the session version of Butcher is (as far as I can tell) indistinguishable from the album release and while the sleeve notes state that Youth thinks that the session version of Wardance is better than the album version I would have to disagree - the RAF mix beats it into a cocked jester's cap.

That said, there are some tracks that I haven't managed to collect before - Chop Chop, Nuclear Boy and Malicious Boogie. Those three songs certainly threw a new light on the group for me so I'm certainly not disappointed. As this was a birthday present (from a wife who hates Killing Joke with a passion!) I'm doubly chuffed.

If youre wavering between this and Spanish Sessions, I'd go for the latter to get the Joke in its real, raw up to the minute guise.

Then get this one!
