Review

"I have purchased three of your books: Paediatics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Haematology. I have found the story–telling style and the level of detail contained in the cases to be balanced nicely so that it retains a realism that other case books lack and that reader remains engaged in the outcome of the investigations and the end–point of the case. All in all, these series make for interesting and entertaining reads which ultimately renders them an excellent learning tool.” – Medical Student,Trinity College Dublin

"I would be very happy if my medical studetns read this book before an attachment! I think this format is excellent...it encourages the students to think clearly about real patients and not just learn facts in isolation." – Honorary Leturer, University of Leeds

"This book covers a very wide range of material, from neonatal medicine in the sick preterm infant to the teenager who has taken an averdose. It contains a large number of cases which are all relevent to medical student learning...each case study gives details of relevent questions to ask in the history, examination findings and management plans...an excellent resource for final exam revision." – MSc Student, University of Liverpool Medical School

"Fantastic. Very impressed and very easy to read...relevent cases and good layout." – Final Year Student, Warwick Medical School

Get the most from clinical practice, with Clinical Cases Uncovered

Guiding you through paediatrics, Clinical Cases Uncovered presents real–life problems which you can work through and improve on time and again. Each case looks at a different child, from premature infant to teenager, with acute or long–term problems. Presentations reflect common primary care and hospital–based practice and will give you a detailed insight into how children with a wide variety of problems can be assessed and managed.

The first section covers essential paediatric basics, then looks at common disorders and useful pointers. There is a section on practical assessment of children, helping you adapt your skills for the age of the child and the presenting problem. The helpful self–assessment section then lets you test all you have learnt and makes for great revision.

This excellent book manages to successfully combine the benefits of traditional textbooks and case based learning, to provide a really useful resource for paediatrics rotations, or as a quick refresher!

The first section of the book provides an easy to read yet comprehensive account of development from birth through to puberty, childhood infections, immunisations, nutrition and genetics, with a number of helpful tables for quick and easy reference. There is also a very practical section on history taking and examination. One of the particular highlights of this section is a section, which lists common symptoms, possible diagnoses and important "not to miss" points - an easy list that's easy to remember and invaluable when a bit flummoxed on the ward/infront of your examiner!

The rest of the book is split up into 32 cases - from the tiny baby to the teenager who has taken an overdose. I was really impressed with the amount of information in these sections - after reading through a case you really feel like you have a good grip on a range of conditions. The book also has a very "practical" slant - in a case with a boy with autism it discusses a relative worried about the MMR, and in "the boy with fits" a simple flow chart for managing seizures in children. Each case requires you to think of a differential, key points of history and examination, reviewing differentials, further investigations, diagnosis and management. This active approach to learning holds your attention, and clearly highlights how well you know the topic, and the book clearly outlines a "best answer", with a helpful case review at the end. The book also has a useful MCQ/EMQ section for exam practice.

I was really impressed by this book. I had been somewhat sceptical that a "case based" book would be interesting to read, but a bit low on information and would need to be supplemented with a textbook. However, this book manages to combine textbook level information into interesting cases, which helps you to "pigeonhole" information for recall later- "oh yes, I remember that boy with autism...."

Highly recommended.

great read 17 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
Borrowed from the library as doing Paeds at present and needed a refresher

Really easy to read book, seems to cover most of the key points and is succinct and written in an engaging way.

Highly recommended!

I feel I can almost read it cover to cover.. unheard of for a medical text book.

Format:Paperback
This book I have used for an english speaking class with Pediatricians in a hospital in Spain. They are all qualifiyed doctors working in different departments such as A&E, PICU, Neonatology etc and require help with their Medical English. And they have enjoyed using the book and looking at the different cases. I provide them the basic information about the cases and they have to answer the questions like "what diffential diagnoses are appropiate", "what tests are needed", etc.
This book is essentially for med students preparing for exams in pediatrics and I would suggest this book would be an excellent aid for revision.
