Product Description

Hamstead & Highgate Express, 19 Oct, 2006

It would be wrong to dismiss this little gem as a stocking
filler... an amusing and fascinating collection of facts...'

Product Description

Hot on the heels of the 2005 hit "The Pedant's Revolt" comes "The Pedant's Return", the latest in Andrea Barham's popular pedantry series. How many times have you encountered an extraordinary 'fact' in your everyday life that's led you to think, 'That can't possibly be true!'? Or you've heard something highly improbable and completely dismissed the chances of it being in the least bit authentic? In "The Pedant's Return", a great many doubts will be dispelled as a range of surprising statements that sound as though they couldn't possibly be genuine, are, through careful and committed research, revealed to be 100 per cent correct. Covering every conceivable subject matter, from art and literature to food and drink, the animal kingdom, figures from history, science and medical matters, words and sayings, the human body and buildings, "The Pedant's Return" will clear up those niggling points of fact endlessly disputed at social gatherings and among friends, in an accessible, informative and highly entertaining manner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great follow-up, fantastic in its own right!, 8 Nov 2006

This review is from: The Pedant's Return (Hardcover)
The Pedant's Return is a great follow up to Andrea Barham's wonderful Pedant's Revolt book. That book showed you things that you thought were right were actually wrong; this one shows you things that you thought were wrong are actually right! But this is more than a good follow-up book -- it is fantastic in its own right! Think it's a myth that flamingos are pink because of their diet? Wrong! It's true! What about the old adage 'red sky at night, shepherds delight' for predicting good weather the following day? Yep, that's true too! And did Sir Walter Raleigh really put his cloak down for Queen Elizabeth I to walk on? Apparently so! This is an educational, entertaining, fun-filled book, good to read through or to dip into. And with Christmas coming, it would make a perfect present for the friend or relative who thinks they've got (or know) everything!

2.0 out of 5 stars Mostly well known facts, 4 Dec 2010
By
This review is from: The Pedant's Return (Hardcover)
While the foreruunner, the Pedant's Revolt was mildly amusing telling you things yoyu thowugt were right are wrong, this 'reverse' edition tells you things you (or I, anyway) either knew (about two thirds) or really couldn't care abut.
