Product Description

Sylvia is an adopted child of abusive parents. Her mother adopted her to get out of doing war work. Her father has a drink problem. She grows up in London during the 1950's. Her refuge is at school where she can escape the cruelties of her home life. Pregnant at fourteen through no fault of her own, she meets a gypsy boy called Bobby who takes her to see his mother. His mother Rosa helps with the termination of Sylvia's child. Thrown out of the family home at the age of sixteen and sleeping rough on the streets, Sylvia is arrested and put into one children's home after another. Desperately absconding, a life on the streets means starvation or prostitution and it is only when she becomes pregnant that Sylvia resolves that her life must change if only for the sake of her child.

Excellent 1 Oct 2003
Format:Paperback
Very good - sad, moving but had me engrossed. The author created a wonderful atomosphere of the time it was set in and I was lost in the book with the children and the sweetshop. I found it very hard when Sylvia was shuffled around from one home to another, but it was written very well so it didn't feel hard going at all. In fact I read it so fast I was surprised. An excellent book - shame the author hasn't wrote anything else.

Brought up in Peckham 17 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was brought up in Nunhead, Peckham, in the 1940's I know the streets, St Silas Church (Knocked down now) I went to Friarn Road School, and left 1961 at 15. But unlike the character in the book, Sylvia, I had a protected life with my family of 3 brothers and 2 sisters, mum and dad, on Ivydale Road. My nan lived up the road as did my cousins, we had marvelous family get togethers. The Peckham Rye Park was a sunday treat for us, and I had to walk through it everyday to get to School, I remember my childhood days as fun, but my dad had to work all the hours to feed and cloth us, It was hard but all were in the same boat so as to speak, not like these days, as the gap is getting bigger.

Excellent Read 22 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
WOW what an excellent book, I haven't read such a good book in years. It gripped my attention from beginning to end. A really fast paced novel. The main character Sylvia was my heroine. I laughed and cried alternately. I didn't want to finish it. I just couldn't put it down. I urge everyone to purchase a copy of this book. I recommended this book to my friend and she could not buy it from Amazon at the time as there were none in stock. I have since found out that the only copies available are from the author's website. It is particularly nice to buy it from there as all the proceeds go to help augment child abuse charities. Well done Janice Cooke and thank you for sharing your story with us. xxx
