Great Early Sci-Fi 6 Sep 2008
Format:Paperback
This is the first book in Asimov's Empire series written in 1950. Earth has been ravaged by nuclear war and is an outcast among the other 200 million planets of the Empire. (The same universe as in Asimov's classic Foundation trilogy.) Since earth is very poor, the old are 'removed' at 60 so as not to burden the working population. I found this story very enjoyable. Even though it was written 57 years ago Asimov's ability to write a good story makes this book well worth reading today.

"Peeble in the Sky" is about a normal man, named Joseph Schwartz, in the twentieth century who, unknownly to all, is transported several millenia into the future via an experiment with nuclear material. He reaches Earth but everything changed: people, language and even the planet's crust. There (space/time) he is subjected to a risky experiment (because he doesn't understand people) that can increase his synapses' velocity and make him smarter. The fact that the experiment is made illegaly brings many consequences not only to Schwartz, but also to the planet.

This book is part of "Tratorian Empire", althought the three books are only tenuously connected. In the context, this trilogy is part of the "Greater Foundation" series.

The prose of the novel is somewhat dry, at least compared to other works of Asimov, nonetheless the story can be fully appreciated and if you don't have anything to do, the book can be read in four or five hours (or five/six hours, but who cares when you read for pleasure).

Read, enjoy and bask in the feeling it gives and talk about it.

Till next time,
M.I.T.H. (ManInsideTheHelm)

Classic Asimov 20 July 2011
Format:Paperback
I can't really fault this - or indeed any of Asimov's work. I love it all and this is no exception. A worthy addition to the science fiction section of your library.
