Product Description

Since bursting out of the Seattle scene in 1991 with their multi-platinum selling debut Ten , Pearl Jam have not just remained one of that city s truly great acts, they have also become - over the intervening 2 decades - one of the very finest rock bands in the world today. Famously labelled grunge sell outs by Kurt Cobain, Pearl Jam went onto become, by 1992, the biggest selling music artists in the USA. This success did not, however, sit easily with the group. After sophomore album Vs went on to become the fastest moving American record off all time, Eddie Vedder and Co. set about reconstructing their sound while launching a campaign against what they perceived to be the more unjust aspects of the music industry. And even now, after 20 years in the game, Pearl Jam refuse to rest on their laurels, constantly exploring new musical directions while remaining as fiercely loyal to their fans as ever. Pearl Jam Under Review documents this extraordinary band s rise to glory and explores quite how they have confounded fans and critics alike, maintaining their status among rock s elite while refusing to compromise their artistic and ethical values. Includes archive interviews with the band themselves from across their career, contributions from their closes allies and from the finest rock writers and commentators, rare and classic performance footage, previously unseen photographs, tour antics, location shoots and many other features, which all at once make for the finest documentary in existence on the most iconic rock act of the past quarter century.

This film gives you the real and detailed story of Pearl Jam, looking at all the albums from Ten to Backspacer. The whole history of the band, from Green River and Mother Love Bone, through to today is covered. There's some great live footage on here, and some good analysis of the records and their impact on the world from the 1990s onwards, including content on the Seattle scene.
Made me dig out Vitalogy again. What a great album. This film reminds you of how great Pearl Jam were, and still are. If you're a fan of the band, you'll love this doc!

Without a doubt, if I had to make a short list of the greatest Rock bands of all time, the list would be shorter if I began in 1985. Among the few greats since without a doubt is Pearl Jam and this film does a great job of covering the rise and enduring success of a band that never sold out, has plenty to say, is far from finished and defines a high gold standard in what it is to be a great band. The great 90 minutes start with their origins and moves to releasing albums on their own after a tremendous run with Epic Records. Impressive, original music is all over the place and it does justice to the band, though this could have gone on longer. Extras include a fantastic interview with Vedder.

Nothing new. 9 Sep 2011
By Thelomi
It's pretty clear from the outset that this is a low budget and unauthorised release. The interviewees are clearly knowledgeable but you get the impression that, with the exception of the assistant producer for Ten, they are very much outsiders looking in and this is a compilation of opinions not definitive knowledge.

It is, however, easy to watch and gives a nutshell summary of the origins and early history of the band and their 'percieved' motivations. It is not something a PJ fan will not already know but it is still interesting and the reasons why we worship at the alter of PJ are well verbalised.

The PJ live footage is fairly poor quality and most PJ fans will already have the same footage and better quality on previous official live release DVD's. In fact I think they are excerpts from those official release video's. There are a couple of snippets of very early interviews (one with Andrew Wood) and some poor quality videos at the time of Mother Love Bone.

A lot of the concert footage used to support the dialogue on the years to Vitalogy are of subsequent years. Spot the Binaural logo's in the audience during the Vs section and Matt Cameron on drums during the Vitalogy dialogue. Apart from the MTV footage there are only a couple of poor quality early years snippets.

The general background music is also not PJ, just soundalike riffs and ditties. Clearly they were not allowed to use any actual PJ tracks and this takes some more polish off it.

The detailed reviews really end at No Code and the latter releases are skimmed over which is a missed opportunity. As I have said the analysis of first four albums is well verbalised and, that being the video's strong point, it was a missed opportunity.

There is an interesting interview extra with Eddie Vedder and Matt Cameron. The interviewer struggles actually putting together a sensible question, but because the questions are so vague the PJ guys are fairly full in their responses covering what the interviewer was probably trying to ask and more.

Although I'd recommend avoiding this and waiting for PJ20 to come out I would have to say that, despite the flaws, I was not too offended or disappointed with this release, thus the three stars rather than two.
