Biography

Biographyby Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Pearl Jam rose from the ashes of Mother Love Bone to become the most popular American rock & roll band of the '90s. After vocalist Andrew Wood overdosed on heroin in 1990, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament assembled a new band, bringing in Mike McCready on lead guitar and recording a demo with Soundgarden's Matt Cameron on drums. The magnificant double CD celebrating the band's first 20 years will probably only interest the diehard fans.
The packaging is excellent and includes a very detailed booklet bound in a hardback cover. I won't give you a track by track account but here are my highlights:-
CD1 track 1 - Release (Verona, Italy 2006. I only got to see them at Leeds fest in 2006 so this one is new to me)
track 2 - Alive (One of the first live recordings 22/12/1990)
track 5 - Black (The 1992 MTV unplugged version. The full DVD of this concert is available with the Ten
collector's edition)
track 11- Crown Of Thorns (Las Vagas 2000. The 10th Anniversary tribute to Andrew Wood)
track 13- Walk With Me (Mountain View California 2010 A song from Neil Young's Le Noise. NY joined them for
this one)

CD2 track 1 - Say Hello 2 Heaven (Temple Of The Dog demo)
track 4 - It Ain't Like That (A demo with soon to be touring partners Alice In Chains)
track 5 - Need to Know (A Matt Cameron demo that later became 'The Fixer')
track 10- Indifference (Bologna, Italy 2006. I've not heard this superb live version before)
track 11- Of The Girl, Instrumental
track 12- Faithful (Pistora Italy 2006. A pre gig sound check)

As mentioned earlier much of this will probably be of no interest to the casual PJ listener however it's of great interest to this diehard.

Having read the reviews so far and listened to the music, I cannot agree, this is a great band on film with there music they have produced in there years, weather it is perfect in sound capture or not. Its great to hear odds and sorts of there songs captured thru the years we do not see or lucky not to have been there. Music in some cases may sound as if recorded in the crowd but it is what makes it so down to earth. Great band, great music, but most of all they keep us wanting more! Keep making us smile guys.

A Decent Package 23 Sep 2011

Lets start off with a confession - I haven't seen the film. As soon as it comes out on DVD I will but I missed the screenings. This is partly a companion piece and partly a rarities selection. And whilst it succeeds at times it also fails as well.

Pearl Jam are one of the best live bands in the world. However, as I think I have stated before the world doesn't really need a new live album of theirs (with one exception that I will get to). There are some great live versions on the first disc. But are they better than the other versions out there - probably not and with some of them worse. But also the first disc includes Black from the MTV unplugged set. Now if they would release a CD of that I am in.

Disc two is rarities and live tracks and works partially but just isn't Lost Dogs. Of course Betterman is awesome and the crowd singing the first verse is always hair raising - but we have heard this before. However, this is Pearl Jam and some of the tracks here just are a joy to hear - Given To Fly instrumental is lovely.

Overall this is a good overview of Pearl Jam. It isn't as good as it should be. But this shouldn't distract from the body of work. Pearl Jam 20 is a bit of a missed opportunity. But it still contains enough (just) to make it worthwhile.

Heartwarming, rewarding and periodically thrilling - but that's the film, not this soundtrack. Shorn of the visuals and featuring none of the band members' often wry commentary,... Read more
