Product Description

Synopsis
The powerful new thriller from one of Britain's most skilled and wide-ranging novelists and broadcasters, featuring Nicholas Newman, the hero of The Amethysts, the pscyhological thriller acclaimed by the Sunday Telegraph as 'harrowing, absorbing ...unforgettable'. Played out in the arena of football, Pearl is a compelling story in which the past rises to dominate the present and perhaps the future. Nicholas Newman, affluent, successful, but emotionally unresolved, is a reluctant discoverer of events that took place during the Second World War. Placed under huge moral pressure by the terms of a dead friend's bequest, he stumbles upon a secret that directs the violence on the football terraces of Europe. One of his clients holds the key. Johan Pearl -- 'the Black Pearl' -- a Dutch international footballer, has commissioned Newman to design his house. With the plans comes extraordinary violence, and Nicholas Newman is once again at the centre of a psychological mystery that he can resolve only by examining his own life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Choice of book, 4 Sep 2000
By A Customer
An excellent book written with a beautiful use of the English language. Touching on the issues of post world war crime, and football hooliganism, the book manages to keep you turning the pages, wanting more. There are sufficient twists and turns to keep you reading this, without putting it down. Quite rightly described by the Daily Telegraph as "something exceptional and utterly gripping"

4.0 out of 5 stars Great pyschological thriller., 7 Jul 2009
By Script Angel (Solihull, England) - See all my reviews
This is a very strong psychological thriller which intricately ties together disparate parts of its' protagonist's life. The subtle way in which Nicholas Newman's life is turned upside down is surprising but believable as he is transformed from a man in complete control to one reacting to events controlled by outside forces. Along the way he learns a great deal about his friends, his colleagues and, most importantly about himself. Nicholas is certainly taken on a dangerous and interesting journey that is both action and psychologically based making for a very rounded story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read, excellent plot, wise ending., 20 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Pearl (Hardcover)
From the moment a parcel containing a knife is delivered to Nicholas Newman you enter into a story of real intrigue. "Pearl" is a well written book that graphically takes the reader on a journey around Europe as Newman finds himself an unwitting hero fighting neo-nazism. The book informs the reader of the evil atrocity carried out in second world war to the village of Oradour-sur-Glane, this is very movingly written.

It was a sad that the seemingly intelligent Mary character turned into a wimpering heap around Newman. The other female characters are well rounded and believable. The ending of the book could easily have gone in any direction, the one chosen was wise.

I really enjoyed reading this novel, although some bits I found quite complicated. The characters were intriguing and the story very powerful and moving. Read more
