The impression remains with me that the tenor and baritone duet "In the depths of the temple" from Bizet's "Pearl Fishers" was played every weekend through the 1960s in record request programmes. That should be no surprise after listening to this recording by Bjoerling and Merrill. Unlike too many tenors, Bjoerling always produced a smooth, rounded, expressive tone, never lapsing into harshness at full volume. In this duet, he is well matched by Robert Merrill, who entirely holds his own. The other tracks, all with female singers, are equally good. Bjorling is at the height of his powers. The recordings were made between 1950 and 1959, the last about a year before Bjoerling's premature death in 1960, at the age of 49. Listen and marvel!
