This recording of all-instrumental, unaccompanied duets includes songs both old and new, but everything is squarely traditional. There are hundreds and hundreds of albums of instrumental Celtic tunes, but very few that distill the sheer beauty of the music so potently. Neither of these musicians is much interested in showing off how fast or fancy they can play; instead they devote themselves to finding the link between melody and emotion. Whether it's Phil's gorgeous slow air, "Quendale Bay," or a 19th-century tribute to the Scottish River Spey, the melodies are articulated so elegantly that even nonfans of the genre should respond.
