Good for harder grades, 8 Mar 2010
This review is from: On Peak Rock: The Best Rock Climbs of the Peak District (1500 of the best gritstone & limestone climbs) (Paperback)
On Peak Rock has a good overview of a select few climbs at each crag, and covers quite a large area. However, most of the routes are grade HVS upwards- in the index by grades there is less that 1 page up to Severe, and around half a page per grade from severe to E5.
Most of the pictures are pretty good, though it can be hard to find the part of the crag shown in the book (particularly for places like stanage, where the book can only cover a small snapshot of the crag).
A good book for more advanced climbers, but if you're not climbing at least a HVS you're better off forking out for western grit and eastern grit instead (and something to cover the white peak....)

Has it's place., 20 Oct 2010
This review is from: On Peak Rock: The Best Rock Climbs of the Peak District (1500 of the best gritstone & limestone climbs) (Paperback)
I bought this puppy when visiting the Peaks for the first climb (see what I did there) I think it may be one of the few guidebooks that stands the test of time against the excellent 21st century guidebooks from Rockfax and BMC/CC.
If you're an infrequet visitor to the Peaks DO consider buying this one, the topo is not too bad and for a BEGINNER there ARE plenty of lower grade climbs - 14 Mod, 50 Diff, 91 V Diff, 29 HVD, 88 Severe, 64 HS, 11 MVS (?! Must be a Gritstone thang) 239 VS etc, etc.
The other thing I like is that the book uses a smiley face as a symbol to denote climbs with good gear placement (well-protected) I like this.
One of the other reviewers said you'd be better off buying E Grit, W Grit and one to cover White Peak. That's three guidebooks. You do the math.
If you're an infrequent visitor to the Peaks or a beginner do consider this one. If you are a regular or are planning to visit regularly, do like the lady says...
I can only apologise for the excessive use of Americanisms in this review, it won't happen again.

A good overview of climbing in the Peak, 14 Nov 2000
This review is from: On Peak Rock: The Best Rock Climbs of the Peak District (1500 of the best gritstone & limestone climbs) (Paperback)
It rounds up all the good crags (except Malham) in the Peak with a good relaxed format. It is however quite difficult to find things quickly as some parts of crags are not close together in the book (Burbage, north and south for instance). It shows a good range of routes of all grades with good descriptions, especially of Parthian shot(Burbage south). The only thing they could have included was the heights of the climbs and the grades of the climbs in the photographs. All in all a good guide which should be on every enthusiasts bookshelf.
