Product Description

Product Description

This is the most comprehensive guide to bouldering in the Peak District ever published. All approach, crag and problem information has been reviewed and revised since Vertebrate's first Peak District Bouldering guidebook (2005), and the authors have spent several years researching, writing and updating all of the established crags in the area, together with the many new crags that have risen in popularity or been developed in the last 5-6 years. New crags have been added, including several which have never been fully documented in guides before, such as: the Derwent Edges, Bamford and Bitchen Edge on the Eastern Edges; Beeley Hilltop, the Matlock Quarries, Turning Stone Edge and Black Rocks in the southern Peak; Gradbach Hill, Wolf Edge, New Mills Torrs, Tintwistle Knarr and Black Tor in the western and northern Peak; and, Blackwell Dale, the Alport crags and Dove Dale on the limestone crags. The Churnet Valley bouldering has also been updated. This guide features over 3,300 boulder problems on over 70 crags, both major and minor. Catering for boulderers of all abilities, there are over 2,150 boulder problems below Font 7a, and over 1,150 problems at Font 7a and above. Each crag features detailed access and approach information, together with maps and over 500 photo topos. The guide is illustrated with action photography from some of the area's best photographers, including Adam Long, John Coefield, Keith Sharples and David Parry. A detailed Appendix includes everything climbers need to plan a visit: Tourist Information Centres; cafes and pubs; campsites & accommodation; gear shops; climbing walls; and, useful websites. A Labour of Love 25 Sep 2011
By John H
Format:Paperback
You know the old adage about not judging a book by its cover? Well, just for once, ignore it. Vertebrate Publishing's latest book, Peak District Bouldering, has on its cover a striking shot by Dave Parry of Dave Norton on Low Rider at Stanage. It's a truly original picture, arresting and dynamic and sets the tone for the rest of the book. I have to be really careful what I say here because I know Vertebrate always take the utmost care with every book they publish. In this case however, I'm left mangling an Orwellian motto because, "All VP books are equal, it's just some are more equal than others." This is quite obviously a labour of love for the team who put it together, an attempt to produce a stand-out classic. Graphically, it's streets ahead of anything else on the market, crisp, unfussy and with some really classy touches. The photographic content is simply stunning. I love the fact that some of the smaller shots are just as good as the full page blockbusters - you're constantly discovering little gems as you peruse. The diagrams are uncomplicated and practical, the photo-topos crystal clear and all the information is concise and to the point. If I have a criticism, it's that the damn thing looks so good, you'll hesitate before cramming it into a rucksack. But that hesitation will last only seconds because this guide does exactly what it should do, it makes you want to go bouldering. I'm tempted by so many venues I haven't visited before, tempted to revisit old favourites to check out the latest discoveries. So, however good it looks, it's tough because it's going in the bag. If anyone produces a better guide this year, I'll eat my beanie.

a vast improvement 2 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
This is the updated version of the same title which I previously gave 2 stars to. This edition is much better - maps have been improved, there is a lot more detail and a lot of other areas have been included in this version (it is almost double the size).

The book uses the Font grading system, gives you some nice info at the start of each section/area, tells you where you can park and usually provides a brief description of what to expect from the climbing. The photos are good and there are a lot more of individual boulders making it easy to find the right ones. The problems are indicated on the photos with a white arrow and are now much better at showing the route to take. You will find plenty of problems whatever grade you are at and it will take some time to get through the book! Some of the climbs that were in the last book seem to have been re-graded and so far seem to be a better fit, all of which indicates a lot of care has gone into this new edition. As always grading is open to debate and so you should use the book and make up your own mind.

Definitely worth buying - You won't regret purchasing this new edition (or buying it to replace the older version).

Format:Paperback
The first guide to Peak Bouldering written by this team was a much needed and excellently put together guide. It showed the vast amount of climbing that had been done since the last guide by RockFax in the late 90's, and my copy has seen much use and now has seen better days. When i first heard of a new edition to this guide coming out, my first thoughts wondered how much there would be to add to the last guide. Having now seen and used this new guide i realise how naive my thoughts were as the amount of new problems documented is vast! Not only is there a load of new problems to search out, there are also numerous complete new areas described. Some of these areas are not new to me as a climber but are new from a bouldering perspective (e.g. Bamford), whilst others i have never come across (e.g. Tintwistle Knarr).

The front cover sets the tone for the entire guide with some outstanding photography throughout. A good picture should make you want to find and climb the problem on show. This book delivers that on pretty much every page, which has given me masses of new energy for Peak bouldering. The photo's are combined with good photo topos, making problem finding straight forward, these are then further combined with good accurate descriptions of crag locations and directions. The book is in landscape formate which may not be to everyones taste, but it does mean that crag layouts on the page don't feel squashed (whilst this is the same layout to the previous guide this guide feels less flimsy).

Its clear that a lot of work has gone into this guide and the result is a magnificent book which sets a solid standard for future bouldering guides to come.

Well done chaps!!! (Just needs to stop raining now)
