Biography

When you start to record a new album, people always ask you what you think it will sound like. It’s almost impossible to talk about music that doesn’t exist but when we started work on our sixth album late last year, I thought that for once, I had a pretty good idea. Put simply, Observator was supposed to be our Los Angeles album. At least, that’s what I imagined it to be in ... Read more in Amazon's The Raveonettes Store

Product Description

Peahi (/pe'hi/ pay-ah-hee; is a place on the north shore of the island of Maui in the U.S. state of Hawaii. It has lent its name to a big wave surfing break, also known as Jaws. During off season the spot is taken over by meth fuelled crazies and people are advised to not venture out there. Immersed in the surf-history of Southern California, where both Sharin and Sune reside, the album incorporates various elements from this culture into every song both lyrically and musically. The result is their most complex, intricate and autobiographical work to date.

I'm writing this review to right a bit of a wrong really.  I'm not the kind of person to criticise someone else's opinion.  On the other hand, this is a really good Raveonettes album that has been left, at the time of writing, with 2.5 stars out of 5.  This could put fans or newcomers off completely - and that's wrong.

The Raveonettes sound has always been, to a greater or lesser degree, as if the Jesus And Mary Chain had been produced by Phil Spector.   This has always been their attraction.  Hence the white noise/distortion has been very much a part of their sound.  I'm not a fan of modern day RnB, but I wouldn't leave a damning review of an Usher album that probably would be considered his best in the world of RnB

This album really stretches the Raveonettes sound - yes it has white noise/distortion (like every other Raveonettes album) but also some great hooks - and even orchestration on the excellent track 'Wake Me Up'.

This is a great Raveonettes album.  I hope this review pushes the star rating up a bit - and deservedly so.

Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo have certainly dished up
a big, thick soup of a noise on their new album 'Pe'ahi'. It's
perhaps the rawest, brashest set they've delivered so-far.
The sixties girl-band-Spector(ish)-wall of sound schtick is
still pretty much intact but there is more energy and certainly more
variety on offer in these numbers than we've encountered before
(it could probably precipitate a tidal wave on their island home!)

There's enough power going on in Mr Wagner's guitar chords on
'Sisters', for example, to raise blisters on your eardrums but the
chaos is tempered by occasional contrasting harp-like passages
which gives the invention room to breathe (Ms Foo sounds positively
angelic for a moment or two in the central section). 'A Hell Below', too,
despite the reverb dial being turned up to ten (and how they do love that
reverb dial!) has a decidedly pretty tune embedded in the shadowy depths
of its howling instrumental arrangement. So too with the lovely 'The Rains
Of May' with its exotic vocal harmonies and the almost delicate 'Wake Me Up'
which feels like being stuck sweating inside a sultry half-remembered dream.
'Kill!', however, is the album's true heart of darkness. A veritable sonic nightmare!

'Pe'ahi' is as good an example of controlled chaos as we are likely to hear this year.

Recommended.

For a while I think the Ravonettes were losing the way a bit. They were bringing out good albums but not too varied from the last. This one however has a go and producing a more upbeat almost danceable album! It is such a well produced album and there are some outstanding moments, "Killer in the Streets" and "Wake Me Up" are awesome! "Kill!" is the piece de la resistance! A thrashy but still melodic saunter into Lykke Li terrority which on the face of it is a great move! Play this one loud, it's sheer scuzziness is a delight!

It is odd as I read the reviews here and was expecting the worst but no, it's a great album. I am not sure if the negative reviews are hardcore fans who do not really want them to move on. For me this is gorgeous, accessible Scandinavian pop at it's best.

Please ignore the guy who gave this one star as this is a true return to form for The Raveonettes, It is also a slight departure from their normal sound bringing in new instruments such as a harp and they have done away with their normal plodding (in a good way) J&MC sound on many of the tracks. Yes, it's distortion heavy but sounds fantastic in the car at loud volume. Highly recommended!

Have loved the Raves since 2003. Sune is a god like genius of a songwriter and this is his strongest work yet. Brilliant, noisy, quite beautiful and in equal measure; easily the best album of 2014!

Excellent album containing some of the best tracks The Raveonettes have ever made in their long career to date. Hoping that a lot of this album will be on their live set, later on in the year.
