Product Description

Product Description

This is a true story set in the days of black and white photographs that hid the colours of a reality that was blissful...until the War broke out. Young men and women answered the call to defend their country and to risk their lives and sacrifice their youth. It changed people, it changed lives. Although devoid of John Wayne style Hollywood heroics, the attitudes displayed were a real sense of heroism. Young people never knew from day to day what the future held. Hope was the mainstay of dreams but the smell of death was forever present. What was needed was a set of friends and a true love to keep smiling through knowing that they would meet again, some sunny day. And so it was, even though fate seemed to conspire against those two people, it was actually on their side. Jack had an idyllic childhood as the son of a carter on a farm in Dorset. Sophie's life started well but she found herself the nursemaid and mother figure to an ever increasing number of younger sisters. As the pressure built, she had to leave home at seventeen to live with her grandmother close to the bombing. Then she met Jack. They were married but parted for three years the day after Sophie became pregnant. Both were nearly killed, but yet they came back together, and remain that way today at 87 and 86 years old.

From the Publisher

If this book were not a true story, then nobody would believe it.

Jack and Sophie had different childhoods in the years between the Wars. Jack grew up on a Dorset farm as the youngest of seven children. Sophie, as the eldest of seven sisters found herself increasingly having to look after her growing number of siblings.

The couple met and then moved apart. There were lots of `near misses' during the War, but they both, luckily, survived.

Fate appeared to be ganging up on them but it was actually conspiring to keep them together. Now in their late eighties, they have remained a happily married couple.

Full of colourful description of the old rural England and their War experiences, this book tells how their love grew and survived against all odds.

Sadly, Jack died on the 14th January 2009, aged 87. Sophie is still alive at 86. When Jack died, they were still both together

Interesting read 27 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed reading this book, and finished it in one sitting as it is not overly long. The book is full of information, shedding light on not only WWII but life on a farm and what it was like for those left at home while their loved ones went off to fight. I myself lived in a small village with parents who had been of similar age to this couple. But sadly I didn't get to hear about much of their childhoods, or early years, so I've little to pass on to my own sons.
I recommend this book - enjoyable to read.
