Book Description

9 Mar 2011
A one-volume history of the Liberal Party and its antecedents, the alliance between the Liberals and the SDP in the 1980s, and of the Liberal Democrats. Drawing on the most recent scholarly research it sets out how the Liberal Party was formed in the mid-nineteenth century; the impact of Ireland and Gladstone s support for Home Rule ; the reasons for the Party s calamitous decline after the First World War; and the factors underlying the Party s unexpected revival in the second half of the twentieth century, culminating in the formation of the Liberal Democrats and the party s subsequent history. Currents in liberal thinking are explained and also included are biographies of key individuals, election results, and a timeline of key events.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'A Panorama of British Liberalism 5 Oct 2011
By Macko
Format:Hardcover
This multi-authored survey can be read as a whole, or dipped into by students seeking material for essays. The editors have marshalled an impressive array of experienced and acclaimed. historians to write the introduction and eleven chapters, which gradually narrow in focus: the first sweeping from the Exclusion Crisis to the Great Reform Bill, the last assessing the 2010 Coalition. The chapters have separate authors, but a house style is sustained, with objective, analytical narrative passages interspersed with brief pen-portraits of key figures, extracts from speeches, and election statistics. At the end of each chapter there is an up-to-date bibliographical essay, and the book concludes with appendices on party organisation, the vote at general elections since 1832, recognised party leaders since the 18th century and a timeline of key dates. 'Peace, Reform and Liberation' is an attractively produced book of serious history.

5.0 out of 5 stars The new standard history 8 Jun 2012
By Andreas
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book in December, just before leaving for the US on a Christmas holiday. By chance, I packed this book in my bag, perhaps to read on the aeroplane. Pulling it out shortly after takeoff, I was engrossed. I stopped only for a few bites of lunch.

This volume represents the culmination of a long effort to create, in a single volume, a comprehensive history of the Liberal Democrats and the parties and groups that preceded the modern party. It is an overwhelming success.

For those of us, whom previously had only read about, or worked on the modern history, from Orpington Man" in 1962, it provides much needed insight.

Of particular note are Dr Mark Pack and Stephen Farrell's opening chapter from the Glorious Revolution through the Great Reform Act, and the chapters from Prof. David Dutton, Jamie Reynolds and Ian Hunter, and Robert Ingram which carry the reader from 1914-1974.

Finally, Iain Dale's new publishing firm, Biteback Publishing, has done an excellent job of putting together a book that is not only a pleasure to read, but also well constructed and durable. Perhaps even as durable as the chapters contained therein.

The volume is erudite but remarkably easy to read. It is full of carefully researched detail but presented with clarity and flows very logically.
The production is of a high standard presenting a book that will make an impressive gift although no one is going to get their hands on my copy
