Product Description

CD Description

Having successfully recorded albums in various genres such as jazz, rock and skiffle, Van Morrison turns his hand to country for this, his first recording for Lost Highway. The album features fifteen tracks, twelve of which are classics written by some of country's most famous names including Hank Williams, Emmylou Harris and Conway Twitty. Also included are three tracks penned by Morrison himself which fit perfectly into this country set.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointed, 12 April 2006
By Linden Arden (Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
As an avid Van fan in the 60s and 70s I used to look forward to a new album with anticipation. There was always something different and interesting. His last excellent album was, for me, Enlightenment, some years ago. Apart from the excellent live 'One Night In San Francisco' The Man's been treading water for years. Pay The Devil is no exception. Stodgy and boring. If you want good country, listen to Bob Harris's Country Programme. If you want good Van, check out Astral Weeks, St Dominic's Preview, Tupelo Honey (a good Van country album) and yes, the much understood Hard Nose the Highway. Come on, Van. Get a grip.

3.0 out of 5 stars Flattering to deceive the devil more like, 18 Mar 2006
By A Customer
I feel somewhat cheated having read a five star and a four-star reviews of the CD, this together with my great enjoyment of heartfelt country balads told me that this was an album for me despite steering well clear of any of Van's new recorded output for a good few years now.

Unfortunately, I have to say that I am firmly in the disappointed camp and once again I think I have to put this down to the lack of real feeling in all but perhaps the best two or three tracks here (Things have Gone To Pieces, What Am I Living For and the rightly praised Till I Gain Control Again).

Unfortunately, much of the rest is mundane and Van sounds like he would rather have a nap. I think the decision not to head to Nashville and hire a crack set of session troops because somehow it sounds like an Irish band playing country rather than the Real McCoy.

A missed opportunity I feel....perhaps Van just doesn't have the power any more....

3.0 out of 5 stars country album, 2 Aug 2006
By jokerman (scotland) - See all my reviews
Van's first country album after all these years. He just doesnt have a "country" voice and I just dont believe a word of what he is singing about as you would with a true country artist.Soul ,blues and jazz it comes from his heart. musically ok
