Product Description

Album Description

Pay The Devil, the new country set from the legendary Van Morrison is comprised of 15 tracks, 3 originals and 12 covers of some of Van Morrison’s favorite classic country songs, including "Your Cheatin Heart", "Things Have Gone To Pieces" and "Big Blue Diamonds".

Morrison has successfully recorded jazz, rock, R&B, blues, Celtic, skiffle and more. Now his distinctive voice melds seamlessly with country classics written by songwriting masters such as Hank Williams, Webb Pierce, Merle Kilgore, Rodney Crowell, Curly Williams and Leon Payne. The magic also carries over beautifully on Morrison’s three original songs "Playhouse", "This Has Got To Stop" and the title track.

"Van aint no Merle" 27 Mar 2007
Format:Audio CD
This didn't really work for me,i don't confess to being a massive Van Morrison fan,..but i am a massive Country music fan,..and i guess i've been spoilt listenting to country music at its best with true legends of Country music that keep us firmly fixed on that barstool crying into our beer,..i do find it hard to find any belief in what i'm hearing,..a good country singer will get you feelin the hurt, the pain,it comes from within, there's no mistakin Van is the man when he does what he does best,..i'm glad i purchased this CD because i was very curious to hear it,..there are some great country classics there,..but sadly for me not done with the true feelin and heart and soul that makes a great country song,..but i still recommend that you add this to your collection,..not one of the greatest ever "cross over" records i've heard,..but i'll stick with it,..who knows it might just win me over completely..well worth a listen and the money.

I feel somewhat cheated having read a five star and a four-star reviews of the CD, this together with my great enjoyment of heartfelt country balads told me that this was an album for me despite steering well clear of any of Van's new recorded output for a good few years now.

Unfortunately, I have to say that I am firmly in the disappointed camp and once again I think I have to put this down to the lack of real feeling in all but perhaps the best two or three tracks here (Things have Gone To Pieces, What Am I Living For and the rightly praised Till I Gain Control Again).

Unfortunately, much of the rest is mundane and Van sounds like he would rather have a nap. I think the decision not to head to Nashville and hire a crack set of session troops because somehow it sounds like an Irish band playing country rather than the Real McCoy.

A missed opportunity I feel....perhaps Van just doesn't have the power any more....

country album 2 Aug 2006
Format:Audio CD
Van's first country album after all these years. He just doesnt have a "country" voice and I just dont believe a word of what he is singing about as you would with a true country artist.Soul ,blues and jazz it comes from his heart. musically ok

Not Van Morrison, Nor Country Music
With all due respect to the musicians and the rest of folks who made possible this work, I reckon this is a bad album. I don't know if Mr. Read more

Suits his voice better than most
I have been a fan of Van's music for some time, but not of his voice. I've commented elsewhere that I rather hear his Music Director (Georgie Fame) sing than Van. Read more

This is sadly a further sign of Van's decline as an original creative artistic force. That he has followed it with a couple of best of compilations underscores the lack of... Read more

Great songs, great voice.
I'm not particularly a country fan, nor a Van fan, but I love this album! His vocals have a beautiful strong-yet-world-weary quality, and I'm so glad I've heard these songs, which... Read more

Very, Very good album
If you like country music you will love this album. If you are a Van Morrison fan I'm not so sure, this isn't his usual kind of music. But I think it's great. Read more
