"A captivating look at the fine line between good and evil. The Pawn is not to be missed." --Ann Tatlock

Product Description

Special Agent Patrick Bowers had only met one man who made him truly afraid. Until now. When he's called to North Carolina to consult on the case of an area serial killer, he finds himself in a deadly game.
Cunning and lethal, the killer is always one step ahead of the law, and he's about to strike again. It will take all of Bowers's instincts and training to stop this man who calls himself the Illusionist. And just when the pieces start to come together, Bowers realizes they're not quite adding up. Can he unravel the pattern and save the next victim? Or will the Illusionist win the game by taking one of his opponent's pieces? Thrilling, chilling, and impossible to put down, The Pawn will hold suspense lovers in its iron grip until the very last page.

Short but good 11 Dec 2010
By F. Pook
Format:Kindle Edition
I thought this would be worth trying for free and it certainly was. It is not a particularly long book and I completed it in a day. I would disagreed with both of the previous reviewers slightly. I did not find it over Christian in content at all - certainly far less than I expected given the first review. As for the second review - yes maybe it is a bit over the top, but it is a story written to be entertaining and not to be put in to practise. As for graphic descriptions, I would not say it is over run with them.

Overall a good day's distraction and for free you really have nothing to lose do you?

What I Love about this novel, is that, like a few thrillers that are coming out of the Christian market at the moment, this novel is a look at the world through a Christian perspective, and not a full on novel with a hidden Christian message (There's nothing wrong with this approach, as I like many novels that go down this road) This novels deal with quite graphic themes of murder, which may put some readers off, but, unfortunately this reflects the world we live in. Issues of grief, father/parenthood are also covered. This is the first novel/book that I have come across from Mr. James, but even now, I'm chomping at the bits to read the follow on in this series The Rook (Bowers Files)

Good overcomes evil 26 April 2011
By Midnight TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I downloaded this when it was on free offer at the beginning of December. Unfortunately, quite a number of the 'crime books' offered during this period would in fact be better described as Christian literature - maybe it was the build up to Christmas?

I believe this was a debut novel and is the first in a planned series of books.

The story is set in North Carolina and features FBI Agent Patrick Bowers. Still grieving from the recent loss of his wife, widower Bowers seeks to solve cases through time and location. He is trying to apprehend 'The Illusionist', a serial killer who leaves chess pieces at the scene of his crimes.

A secondary character, Tessa, Bowers' teenage step daughter is thrown into the story to allow further spiritual soul searching.

While I'm not particularly squeamish and certainly not generally adverse to gruesome description, I did find this unnecessarily graphic in parts and it contains scenes of animal cruelty.

I didn't find the plot(s) particularly cohesive and overall, to me, the story came over as disjointed and clumsy.

As I did not feel the story was very subtle in it's attempts to portray good overcoming evil, it's highly unlikely I will read the other books in this series.

Superb introduction to the series
Great reason to have "free" books. Having down-loaded this because it was free, we (wife and I) then went and bought all the rest because of how much we enjoyed the first one. Read more

Very entertaining.
A very entertaining book but found a bit weak in the middle only to result in a very explosive not to be missed ending. Definitely worth reading the further books in the series.
