Of all the great opera singers Luciano Pavarotti became very much The People's Tenor, able to reach listeners of all ages and persuasions, many of whom would not normally be found in any of the world's opera houses. This miscellaneous recital disc, drawn from recordings issued between 1983 and 2003, features mainly Italian love songs by composers who, in many cases, are hardly household names. Not surprisingly, perhaps, a lot of the numbers are very much of a muchness, pleasant rather than memorable but all benefiting from the heartfelt generosity of the great tenor's voice. Only four of the songs stand out : Non Ti Scordar Di Me; Al Giochi Addio (a version of the Love Theme from Nino Rota's score for the 1968 film version of Romeo and Juliet); Lehar's You Are My Heart's Delight (in Italian); and the one item sung in Pavarotti's rather idiosyncratic English, If We Were In Love, composed by John Williams for the tenor's only Hollywood film, Yes, Giorgio. This is a disc which is, perhaps, best taken in small doses and which includes one track, Caruso, which hardly does justice to the memory of one of the tenor's legendary predecessors and another, the dreadfully hackneyed Volare, which could well have been omitted. The actual music apart, the disc has a number of annoying shortcomings : no information about the songs, the composers, the accompanying orchestras and choir or the arrangers. There are no track timings and no texts or translations. Moreover, the final track (Canto) is listed as a 'Bonus Video', which I have totally failed to activate.
