Product Description

Product Description

The great radio detective lives againin a brand new reading by Anthony Head. Crime novelist and detective Paul Temple and his glamorous wife Steve made their first appearance on BBC Radio in 1938. They inhabited a sophisticated world of chilled cocktails and fast cars, where the women were chic and the men wore cravats - a world where Sir Graham Forbes, of Scotland Yard, usually needed Paul Temple's help with his latest tricky case. The radio serials proved so popular that Francis Durbridge was inspired to write a succession of novels featuring the smooth sleuth. Paul Temple and the Curzon Case is a gripping story of kidnapping, intrigue and sudden death read by Buffy and Little Britain star Anthony Head. An aeroplane crashes on the cliffs of Dulworth Bay, and two boys disappear from a public school in the same village. Are the two events connected? And who is the mysterious Curzon? His name first appears etched on a cricket bat owned by one of the missing Baxter boys, but nobody at the school, in the village or the boys' father has heard of him. When another boy vanishes, and a murder occurs, Paul knows that only by fitting a face to the name can he end Curzon's reign of terror...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant reading of a good Paul Temple novel., 14 Jan 2006

Paul Temple and the Curzon Case was broadcast as a serial in 1948 in the days when Kim Peacock was Paul Temple, but even then Marjorie Westbury was of course Steve, and Durbridge novelized the serial in 1972 but it was never reprised with Peter Coke in the role.

Anthony Head is an excellent choice for reader, his voice has a similarity to the Peter Coke BBC adaptations we now know, and also it is light enough to be convincing in female dialogue, he cannot replicate Marjorie Westbury’’s wonderful Steve lilt (in real life she had a quite different voice) but that is asking too much of any male reader. I have a number of Temple novels by various readers and Head is by far the best.

There are a number of novels not available in the BBC dramatizations so please let us have these. This audio book cannot be recommended highly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth a look, 28 Mar 2006
If you're a fan of the BBC full cast dramatisations please don't be put off by this being read by Anthony Head rather than a full cast.

Head's reading style and voice lend themselves very well to the feel of the Paul Temple stories. I was worried that it might lack the atmosphere and pace of the full cast versions and this simply is not the case. You get sucked in just as easily.

This has a different feel to it simply by virtue of being read rather than acted and in this way it feels less like you are in the thick of it (but at the same time you use your imagination more which gives it a more personal feel) but the quality of the story is exactly the same as the previous mysteries, very good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable sleuthing with style., 2 Feb 2009

Anthony Head does a splendid job of bringing all the characters vibrantly to life. I was a little anxious about how his sole narration would portray "Steve", but I need not have worried for even with the female characters, his performance was flawless. I found this production to be thoroughly entertaining and recommend it to anyone who likes to put their feet up of an evening and enjoy a little sophisticated arm-chair sleuthing on the quiet. The story might NOT have been the Temples' most absorbing case, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
