Yet another reissue of one of the BBC radio collection of Paul Temple mysteries provides further evidence for the contention that murder mysteries work well on radio. By 1968, the year this one was first broadcast, market forces tended to draw writers away from radio to television as a medium for such entertainments. I wonder if TV murder mysteries from the late 60s would stand up as well to reissue as these highly expert radio productions.

Writer Francis Durbridge works the formula well here. Murders occur at regular intervals, the word "Alex" linking itself to them. Their investigation leads to many encounters and throws up many changes of location. Temple and his wife are assassination targets from time to time. Several characters are not what they seem. The charm and interest of the Paul-Steve relationship is well displayed. The timing and microphone skills of principal actors Peter Coke and Marjorie Westbury are exceptional.

This 8-episode case was to be the last in a radio series that ran from 1938 to 1968. The series comprised 28 cases all told, although 5 of the latter cases (including this one) were reworkings of earlier ones.

This is another cracking episode from the series of Radio Paul Temples.Although probably one of the later ones -with a slightly more up to date script & production values - it still cracks along at a fair pace - with a higher than usual number of body counts!!After The Conrad Case I rate this the next best. Great for listening in instalments ( 1 per day or week) rather than all in one hit! Roll on the next one !Also once you get used to the plot etc after listening to the tape several times - they are a great way of dealing with insomnia -it is just so easy to doze off!! Enjoy

They're back. The dashing writer Paul Temple and his lovely wife Steve are once again up to eyes in bodies and danger in this super radio play set in eight episodes. However did we fans manage to wait an entire week when we had been left with a cliffhanger until the next installment. Thank goodness we now have them all together in sets. Personally I set aside an evening and listen to them straight through.
Not suitable for playing in the car as you are liable to run off the road with the excitement.
Peter Coke and Marjorie Westbury are reading as lovely as ever and the atmosphere puts the listener right on the spot. Hard to believe that the cast were standing around a microphone the size of a telephone box in a studio.
A very good series indeed. This one should definitely not be missed.
