A MUST HAVE FOR ALL,
By usman "usman latif khawaja" (london -havering -u.k) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Paul Newman Collection : Harper / The Drowning Pool / The Left Handed Gun / The Mackintosh Man / Somebody Up There Likes Me (5 Disc Box Set) [DVD] (DVD)
This is 5 discs with "great features" and commentaries too -Harper -Drowning pool and 'Mckintosh man' are a Trilogy about a dashing and daring 'private eye' moulded as modern 'film noir' and all 3 are cool thrillers with a touch of class, and each is a classic in it's own right.
Somebody up There likes me-is a story of the rise of a common convict to the lofty status of the American middle weight boxing champ as 'Rocky' and is a very realistic portrait of a boxer, set in New York city chronicling the life and career of the champion . While 'Left handed gun' is a stylishly violent under-rated' Western 'with an understated yet atmospheric portrayal of a 'vandetta job' gone wrong ,with a poignant portrayal by Paul newman as the leading man and an outlaw ,directed deftly and photographed in a moody monochrome to enhance an affective script about unrequited love and issues dealing with bigotry and racism in western milieu . Together all five are great to have in one box -well worth the price for the commentary alone in Harper alone.

This review is from: The Paul Newman Collection : Harper / The Drowning Pool / The Left Handed Gun / The Mackintosh Man / Somebody Up There Likes Me (5 Disc Box Set) [DVD] (DVD)
I've just finished watching Harper (Moving Target), from my new purchase, a very well priced box set (at the moment) containing 2 Harper films, an espionage thriller set in England and Ireland (I love it when big Hollywood stars do movies over here), a cool western and the man's debut movie, as Rocky M. But I know already I've seen the best of them, one of the best films Newman made, and possibly one of the best detective thrillers ever made. It sizzles with style, entertainment and humour and introduces a new graphic realism to the private eye movie. It is also very noir, and precedes the more lauded Chinatown by eight years! This movie reinvented the genre and had a stack of very good imitators follow it. The (Goldman) screenplay is simply brilliant, as is Newman who here shows he has a sense of humour to go with the looks and the acting ability. Some men are born under a lucky star.
All films have great extra features as mentioned by chap above, and they come in those ultra slim cases which I love, and wish all DVDs were boxed in. It is one of the best purchases I've made and I can't wait to see the other 4 movies. If you are a Paul Newman fan (and let's face it, who isn't?) then snap this one up. An absolute bargain.
