Paul Newman goodies 9 Mar 2010
Five Newman films from the 1950s and 1960s.
The SILVER CHALICE is his first movie and one he derided - and rightly so since it is a turgid, talkative, would be epic, which miscasts and wastes good players like Newman, Pier Angeli,
Virginia Mayo and Jack Palance.
The HELEN MORGAN STORY is a typical 1950's biopic, strikingly shot in b/w CinemaScope and giving Newman a good role as a rather worthless character. Ann Blyth, a fine actress and singer, could have made a decent go at the title character if Warners hasd let her use her own fine voice, rather than dubbing her with Gogi Grant.
The OUTRAGE, an remake of a Japanese film telling the same story from several different angles, has a superb cast in Newman, Claire Bloom, Laurence Harvey and the estimable Edward G. Robinson.
WHEN TIME RAN OUT, a run of the mill disater movie, passes the time okif you ignore the idiotic dialogue and plot developments
RACHEL, RACHEL - finally on DVD, was a deserved triumph for Newman as a diretor, helped no end by the brilliance of his wife Joanne Woodward in the title role.

Despite the paper slip case (each disc is in an additional plastic slim case) tells us only English audio is available and nothing about special features, there's really more to discover:

THE OUTRAGE:
Audio: French, German, Italian, Spanish
Extras: none

THE HELEN MORGAN STORY:
Audio: German, Italian, Spanish
Extras: none

WHEN TIME RAN OUT:
Audio: Czech, French, German, Italian, Spanish
Extras: none

THE SILVER CHALICE:
Audio: French, German, Italian, Spanish
Extras: none

RACHEL, RACHEL:
Audio: Czech, French, German, Italian, Spanish
Extras (yes, finally, but very little): A Jest of God (2:15 minutes only...); Theatrical Trailer
