Amazon.co.uk Review

What could just be another travelogue documentary, Paul Merton In China is lifted enormously by its star. Merton, best known of course for the likes of Have I Got News For You, covers the well and lesser known destinations within China’s border, all the while proving to be an engaging and genial guide.

It helps, of course, that Merton is one of the funniest people working in television today, but Paul Merton In China is a lot more than a chance for him to display his wit (although it is frequently very funny). Instead, he displays a continuing inquisitive interest in the places that we see him visit, never forgetting that his job is to help document a broad, yet often mysterious nation.

Across the four hours of Paul Merton In China, he covers both the contrasting modern and more traditional areas of the country, from the big cities through to the lesser-known areas, meeting some interesting characters while on his travels. And the only problem is that there isn’t more of it, for there’s surely scope for some kind of follow-up here, given that Merton scratches the surface of the country.

Nonetheless, Paul Merton In China is a quite brilliant piece of television, and you only hope that the BBC ensures Mr Merton’s passport is kept regularly stamped in the years ahead. --Jon Foster

DVD Description

The comedian’s oriental odyssey in search of the engaging and the extraordinary.

Paul Merton, (star of Have I Got News for You), journeys across both modern and traditional China as he attempts to unravel the deep mysteries and baffling contradictions of this ancient country.

Travelling to major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu but also to the country’s most obscure and traditional backwaters, Merton enjoys a voyage of personal discovery as he encounters China’s new economic realities, idiosyncratic cuisine and engaging people.

Merton meets representatives from all walks of Chinese life, from the eccentric farmer who has taught himself to build robots out of scrap metal to the apparatchik who has built his own 17th century French chateau. Exploring China’s cultural differences, the comedian braves meals of scorpion and hairy crab, attempts kung fu, prays with Tibetan monks, meets Chinese hip hop artists who only rap about food, and visits Thamestown, a unique recreation of a provincial English town on the outskirts of Shanghai. Laced with Paul Merton’s usual deadpan wit and observations, his journey is an unforgettable oriental trip along the road less travelled.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and fun journey through China, 6 Jan 2009
By KN (Lancs. UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This was a really entertaining travel series by Channel 5. Paul Merton journeys through China to get a look at this beautiful, cultured and mysterious nation.

There are 4 episodes:
1. Beijing - trying out local cuisine in the capital city and a visit to Tiananmen Square.
2. Henan province - the cradle of Chinese civilization, including a visit to the Shaolin Monastery in Zhengzhou city and lessons in kung fu.
3. South China - learning about traditional Chinese medicine in Chengdu, visiting rural China in Guilin and a tranquil boat-ride along the spectacular Li river to Yangshuo.
4. Shanghai - getting a taste of the hectic commercial hub of modern China.

Paul Merton thankfully limits his usually merciless sarcasm to the odd quip about Chinese eccentricities. In fact he comes across as a natural by presenting a quite balanced show on today's China with a combination of good old English charm, curiosity and wit. He has recently made another series with Channel 5, this time visiting India, which is also very good.

After watching the series, I am seriously considering a visit to China - though it may have to wait until I can afford it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Michael Palin's natural successor!, 13 May 2008
When Michael Palin decides to retire, the BBC need surely look no further - Paul Merton is truly a worthy successor.
His wicked sense of humour, charm and a genuine interest in his surroundings and the people he meets make for such pleasurable viewing. He is so easy to watch and has the knack of providing the viewer with a wealth of information whilst making it fun along the way.
China is one of the most interesting and diverse countries I've ever had the pleasure to visit and no matter how many times you go there, there is always something to discover.
It's a pleasure to see such enthusiasm in a presenter and I only hope this is one of many more documentaries to come from him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you could want..., 16 Dec 2008
I used to think that Michael Palin was Just About Perfect as a travelling reviewer...and with his charming personality he is...

But then Paul Mertin adds that something extra. He too has a charming personality, but when combined with his wicked sense of humour, it takes the documentary to another level.

This series was really fascinating giving us a great insight into Chinese way of life. I hope Paul Mertin continues to follow this path in his career...but I also hope he doesn't leave behind his wonderful appearances in shows such as Have I Got News For You.

This makes a great present for all Merton and travel-lovers.
