This is the third Murder Mystery party that I've held and once again it was great fun. It does require a little efort in the sense that I like to set the scene and cook an appropriate meal - but neither is essential. The main thing is to choose guests who will enter into the spirit of things. By the end of the evening nearly everyone was adlibbing like mad; much to the confusion of my brother who thought that he kept losing his place in the script.
I have tried joining in as one of the characters but it doesn't really work if you have to keep popping off to the kitchen. Again, not a problem if the rest of the suspects don't mind holding off for a few minutes while you're gone. Or if, as in my case you have a very helpful husband who works hard behind the scenes. It all depends on your preference and energy level but we've found that the best way is if my friend and I act as the hosts and look after the guests.
I spent a very long time comparing the numerous games and my advice would be that unless a game has only low ratings then just go with the one that you fancy. Everyone has different expectations and in my experience all of them are fun.

It took me a long time to decide which game to go for, I read all the reviews and visited the Paul Lamond website to get more detail on the characters etc. I'm so glad we chose this one! It was brilliant, the Italian cafe setting was easy to create with paper tablecloths, Italian flags and wine bottles dripping with candle wax. We even downloaded some Italian cafe music to play in the background, it all added to the atmosphere! We adapted the menu slightly so that I could prepare as much as possible in advance and then relax and enjoy the evening. Unfortunately one of our party dropped out but it worked just fine with 7 people. There were questions for the missing character but it worked okay without him. Our friends really got into character with their costumes, dodgy accents and arguing once we got into full swing. We had great fun, the instructions etc were really easy to follow and although I came close, nobody quite guessed the guilty party exactly. It took a little while to get going as some of my friends were nervous, not having done a murder mystery before, but by the end of the night they were all raving about how much they had enjoyed themselves and begging me to do another one. That was a couple of months ago, I'm now looking for another one to do in January when all the excitement of Christmas has died down! We all thoroughly recommend this game, if you're looking for a fun night in then try it!

What a cracking murder mystery this was. Great story, characters and fun, highly recommended.
Easily one of the bests of all the murder mysteries I have done, buy and enjoy.

Very pleasant evening for 6 of us - ranging from age13 to seventy something. Not too difficult or obscure and it went down well with a 3 course meal of palma ham and melon, lasagne and tiramisu by candlelight, which was our attempt at an Italian meal! One party member solved it almost correctly, but the other five all had different theories! A good bit of fun to wrap around a meal.

A well written script (with some cracking double entendres) and a relatively easy to follow plot makes this a very good murder mystery. Works best with 8, as otherwise the 2 "extras" lines have to be read out which spoils the ambience.

Perhaps I should have read the guide as we played the CD in the wrong place at one point which caused some confusion. Everyone got into character and made a real effort with their costumes. We weren't tempted by the recipes suggested so chose our own traditional Italian menu. We decorated the table with a checked table cloth and candles in wine bottles which were suggested but we also dressed the room with Italian bunting and plastic grape vines which helped create the scene. We also bought Italian café music CDs which were a real hit.
Everyone played their parts (including accents which improved after a couple of glasses of wine causing a lot of merriment). We all had a fantastic evening and have already purchased another game.
