Paul has over 20 years writing, consulting, training and commercial experience within a wide range of business sectors and company sizes. He is a Visiting Fellow at Cranfield University and works on their Business Growth Programme (BGP) and Value Forum. Previously he was a Senior Teaching Fellow at Warwick Business School and director of their BGP. Responsible for designing, writing and delivering a major training programme 'Understanding Business' for Barclays Bank plc, which to date has been delivered to over 7,000 delegates.
Trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte & Touche before obtaining his MBA (Marketing and Finance) at Bradford University. As a senior consultant with Ernst & Young he was responsible for managing and delivering quality consulting assignments predominantly to large businesses. Seconded to a regional NHS trust for 6 months to help improve management reporting and design and implement cost saving initiatives.
During the 1980s he was investment review director at CDC, a BES fund, and later managing director of Capital For Enterprise Ltd a venture capital fund. In 1998 as group finance director of Adval Group plc he was part of the team, which took the multimedia company on to the Alternative Investment Market.
In recent years he has worked as a mentor and NED for a wide range of businesses. One of these assignments involved a business rescue of a software company which within 3 years was sold on for a multi million pound valuation. Currently he runs the western business club for ex Cranfield BGP participants and consults to several SMEs with growth aspirations.
He has written 6 and co written 6 books:"So We Bought a Computer" (Yorkshire TV/Channel 4 TV) published in 1987 to accompany the TV series of the same name; "The Business Plan Workbook" (Kogan Page) published in 1988; "Funding Options for SMEs" (NMB~Heller/Warwick Business School) published in 1998; "The Best-Laid Business Plans" (Virgin Books) published in 2001; "The Bottom Line" (Virgin Books) published 2001; "Raising Finance: a practical guide for business start-ups and Expansion" (The Times/IOD/Kogan Page) published in 2004; "Growing Your Business" (Routledge) published 2007; "Bookkeeping For Dummies" (Wiley) published 2007; "Starting and Running a Business All-in-one" for Dummies (Wiley) published 2007;" Essential Business Finance" (The Times/IOD/Kogan Page) published 2008; "What Business Should I start?" (Wiley) published 2008; "The Successful Business Plan" (Wiley) published 2008.
