Product Description

Product Description

Since the 1960s thousands of miles of track and hundreds of stations have been closed across Britain. Bestselling author and antiques expert Paul Atterbury traces 36 routes that it has long since ceased to be possible to travel by train but are nevertheless still rich in railway culture. Paul Atterbury encounters crumbling bridges and viaducts, old buildings and railwayana and, complementing the contemporary photographs, he illustrates the journeys with pictures and ephemera of the railways he encounters in their heydey. Packed with archive photographs of trains and life on the old railways ''Lost Railway Journeys'' is a romantic, nostalgic, elegiac journey across all parts of Britain that invites the reader to dream of days and trains that once were.

About the Author

Paul Atterbury is a long-time expert on BBC TV's Antiques Roadshow, and has written on railways, Victorian culture and arts, as well as many other topics. He is also the author of Along Country Lines, Branch Line Britain and Along Lost Lines. Paul lives in Dorset.

Buyer beware 17 Feb 2012

Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
As mentioned by previous buyers ALL the material in this book is present in Paul's other works by the same publisher. It's just a shame this is not made made clear before buying except for a note in tiny writing on the copyright page in the preview! The fact though that even judged as a stand-alone work this volume repeats numerous illustrations within itself! As an example; Pages 76 and 77 have nice large colour views of Adderbury and Ryeford (Not "Ryecroft" as captioned) yet these same views are repeated again on pages 98 and 81) This is not an isolated example as the same goes on throughout the book where pictures are used on section heading pages. I rather like Paul's other books with their eclectic mix of pictures, tickets and posters which have a kind of "scrapbook" feel and am in no way knocking his work but the publisher has done him a huge disservice in the way this one has been thrown together. In short, one for the bargain book shops and leaving me feeling somewhat misled.

Excellent articles, but it would have been nice to know that this is a compliation from "Branch Line Britain", "Along Country Lines" and "Along Lost Lines" by Paul Atterbury so if you own any of these you already have some or all the content of this book.

Disappointing, but in fairness, I have now found this information is available by browsing the Copyright sample page; which of course we all do before purchasing.....

I have always appreicated and enjoyed Paul Atterbury's books on British railway history. However, this book is a serious disappointment since it is largely a compendium (text, pictures, topics) of information published in previous volumes. There is little new material for the series reader in this volume. Nowhere in the sales material for this new volume was it mentioned that the material has been re-published from previous publications.
