Product Description

Synopsis

George S. Patton evoked wildly contradictory appraisals, but he also embodied contradiction: a cavalryman steeped in romantic military tradition, he nevertheless pulled a reluctant American military into the most advanced realms of highly mobile armored warfare. An autocratic snob, Patton created unparalleled rapport and loyalty with the lowliest private in his command; an outspoken racist, he led the only racially integrated U.S. military unit in World War II; an exuberantly profane man, he prayed daily and believed God had destined him to military greatness; a profoundly insecure individual, he made his Third Army the most self-confident and consistently victorious fighting force in the European theatre. This revealing biography illuminates the man behind the legend who modernized the U.S. army and developed the leadership strategies that have inspired generations.

5.0 out of 5 stars A concise yet insightful biography of the triumphant American WWII battlefield commander, General George S. Patton Jr., 9 Mar 2009
By Rolf Dobelli "getAbstract.com" (Switzerland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
General George Smith Patton Jr. was a bold, inspirational American World War II military leader. Known as "Old Blood and Guts" to his troops in Europe, Patton had no equal as a military tactician. As military historian Eric Larrabee put it, Patton had the unique ability to "think like an army" and possessed a nearly mystical, intuitive understanding of battlefield tactics. As commander of America's Third Army, Patton achieved notable successes on the European battlefield in the war against Hitler. The Germans established blitzkrieg (lightning) warfare when they conquered Poland in 1939. But Patton shoved this concept down their throats as his Third Army swept across Europe after the Normandy invasion. Alan Axelrod ably tells Patton's life story in this concise, masterful biography. getAbstract highly recommends this outstanding book about one of America's greatest, most colorful military heroes.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing read, 18 Aug 2009
By Mrs. TK Ellis "Bookworm" (High Wycombe, Bucks) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've just finished reading Patton by Alan Axelrod and to be honest I was disappointed. I am a great admirer of Patton and as someone with a passion for military history he is one of my heroes. My disappointment isn't with the facts of Patton's life but with Axelrod's style of writing. Unfortunately, it is obvious from the first page that the author is biased in favour of the General and Patton's less endearing qualities are painted over.

While the author obviously has a passion for his subject I found Axelrod's style of writing really off-putting and found it difficult to read and enjoy the rest of the book, and although I have finished it I am looking for another book on Patton to try and get the facts in an informative and unbiased way.

While I would encourage anyone to read about such a brilliant warrior I would strongly recommend readers to find another author, Mr Alexrod does not do justice to one of the 20th Centurys greatest soldiers and it is a crying shame.
