Book Description

12 May 2008
Patti Smith is known most widely as a musical artist and a poet but her creative energies are not limited to those genres. This book offers a rare chance to explore the photography of the punk poetess. Published to accompany the exhibition at the Fondation Cartier pour lart contemporain in Paris, it presents hundreds of Polaroids and black and white photographs taken over the past thirty years or more. Concise texts by the artist accompany her poetic and intimate pictures, which are beautifully reproduced in this haunting volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 19 Jun 2008
This is a truly beautiful book. 291 pages of wonderful black and white images from Patti's life. Perhaps the photos themselves aren't technically perfect, but I love their dark graininess and the way they reveal so much about her life and her passions. Her reverence for the people who have inspired her and the sense of her pilgrimage to see the places they lived and the objects they lived with is communicated with a quiet humility and almost meditative spaciousness. Just gorgeous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Snapshots of a rare life 17 Jan 2011
A more beautiful book than I had expected. Large hardbacks have substance. Patti Smith says she is not a photographer. Well she takes pictures doesn't she ? Although these are technically not sophisticated photographs, they have a beauty and atmosphere that is hard not to feel. Together these fragments of a life make up something rather special. Patti Smith is hard to define and has avoided commercial exploitation. Without a fixed label, she is hard to focus on. But this book of fascinating images does give a good picture of this rare woman's life. I find these images very appealing. I find these glimpses into a rare life extraordinary. They say there is no smoke without fire. I say there are no beautiful images without an extraordinary person behind the camera. I recommend this book to anyone with eyes to see and a heart to see more than others.

5.0 out of 5 stars An artist can be expressive in any form 9 April 2011
This book is great! In its small introduction, Patti Smith says that she is not a photographer. Neither am I and I truly enjoyed looking at the pictures. They are minimal, some are blurry, some have movement, some are off-center. There is an artistic freedom about them with which, as an artist myself, I can totally relate. The handwritten descriptions, although at times illegible, bring out a vintage quality to this work.
An expression says that a picture is worth a thousand words. This collection of pictures taken throughout a lifetime portrays a story, the story of a unique personality, a pioneering singer and above all, a woman.
I would definitely recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An American Artist 5 Oct 2008
By Maria Freise - Published on Amazon.com
A beautifully bound book of Patti's polaroids with comments written in English and French. Each photo will remind you of one of Patti's poems or a song that the Patti Smith Group has performed over the years. Very simple layout with strong emotional undertones. PSG fans will love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book Beautiful Photographs 26 July 2010
By John in Oz - Published on Amazon.com

Well worth acquiring - the production of the book itself is of high quality and the photographs are moving - heartfelt little gems. Made me realize what damage the world of the 'perfect', soulless digital camera is doing for our perception of what a photograph is.
