4.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable guide to anyone wanting to make period costume, 8 Jun 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Patterns of Fashion (Hardcover)
A really good overview of each type of ladies dress between 1660-1940. Each dress is displayed on grids(sadly imperial and not metric), but still allows easy reproduction. I have used two patterns to help create modern repro's for myself (a re-enactor). This book was ahead of it's time (mine copy belonged to my mother!).

I found when this book when used with the Nacy Bradfield 'Costume in detail,' provided an invaluable comprehensive guide to actual hands on advice and patterns for making dresses for anyone. For what one book lacked in the detail - the other provided! Eg Bradfield book - no pattern pieces, Arnold Book - only a few dresses of each age - but shown in detail (as patterns on grids).

I often use and look through it for ideas. Includes unbeatable advice on techniques for making the costumes up...

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent historical referance for all costume lovers., 30 Nov 2001
This review is from: Patterns of Fashion 2 (Paperback)
This book and the others in the series are a compilation of line drawings and actual patterns taken from original costumes in museums. Janet goes into very particular detail, and the patterns can be used to recreate exactly the costumes. However, as they have been taken from real garments they are not sised in a modern way, therefore a good knowlege of dressmaking and the adjustment of patterns is needed. They can be used very successfully in conjunction with other books, for example Margot Hamilton Hill's 'the Evolution of Fashion', where modern sised patterns are given, so the style of Janet's dresses can be recreated with simpler patterns. A very good read!!

4.0 out of 5 stars brilliant book if you want to know how it really was, 17 Oct 1999
By A Customer
First, make sure you have the period you want - Janet Arnold has published books for 1660 to 1860 and 1860 to 1940. I have both. They are the best guides I have come across (having looked hard) to historical costume. The only possible improvement would be conversion to metric measurements (much easier when you try to scale the patterns up or down)but the patterns and construction details are incredibly useable.
