Not for beginners... 14 Feb 2010
    By Redhen
    Format:Paperback
I am trying to learn pattern cutting on my own and have had some success with Winifred Aldrich's book. At first 'Patternmaking for Design' makes it all look so easy and clear. However, I found creating the bodice block as shown in the book far too random, giving up after four attempts. I should add that I was drafting to my own personal measurements and not to a standard size. It's not all bad though: the book gives many examples of what might be achieved and explains concepts in detail. Perhaps it is a book that is best used with the support of a tutor and not for self-study.

Excellent. Must have. 26 Nov 2009
    Format:Paperback
Excellent patternmaking book. Follow the clear instructions and you will be able to design anything. For the price of 5 Burda's, you'll never have to buy a useless dressmaking magazine ever again because you'll be able to design it yourself. You will need to appply yourself and be acurate and you will be rewarded with a perfectly fitting article of clothing. All aspects of patterndesigning are covered, even vital information on how to design knitwear.I was a bit wary about ordering such a pricy book but I will certainly advise everyone who dabbles in sewing/pattermaking/changing/designing to buy this book. DVD included. 803 pages full of information you have always wanted know - or never knew you needed to know! I would prefer metric but I am so glad this book is mine.

This book is very good at explaining how pattern pieces can be made and adapted for various designs. It would benefit anyone wanting to made garments to their own style. It is a excellent overall reference book for anyone who makes clothing from students to experienced dressmakers.
