Product Description

Product Description

One of the world's best collections of period designs brought together as an invaluable resource for designers of all kinds, from fabric, textile, wallpaper, stained glass to graphic and fashion designers. This collection of over 300 designs covers wallpaper, textiles, furnishings, costume, tiles and ceramics. The designs range from medieval through renaissance and the 19th century right up to the 1950s; from classic French 17th-century wallpaper through William Morris pomegranate designs to 1950s children's wallpaper. The book is arranged by type of design and motifs and periods and genres to make it as accessible to designers as possible. An index at the back helps make readers find the right motif, style or pattern. Though the designs have a strong European flavour it does feature Asian and Middle Eastern designs that have reached the unsurpassable National Trust collection.

About the Author

Cultural historian Sian Evans has drawn on her extensive knowledge of historic houses and their archives to explore the largely unrecorded working and personal lives of our ancestors 'in service'. She previously worked for the National Trust, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Design Museum, and is the author of Ghosts: Mysterious Tales from the National Trust and Pattern Design.

A bit dull. 19 July 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book covers a range of subjects including textiles, architecture, stained glass etc. but was a bit dull and uninspiring for my taste. Having said that, I bought it hoping that it was all about textiles so was obviously disappointed. Maybe the description should have been a bit clearer. I think the picture on the cover is the best design in the book.

By Freespirit TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
This is an excellent book if you are looking for inspiration to design your own embroidery pattern or authentic decor. It covers various ages of design in various mediums - not just textiles and embroidery. It also covers plaster work, gold filigree, . It is one of the books recommended by the Royal School of Needlework. This book really is what it says in the Title - it is a book of pattern design - aimed to inspire the reader to develop their own ideas rather than provide detailed instructions on various aspects of pattern designs and how to achieve them. Ideal as a resource and a reference book. Not something you can read and enjoy. Still excellent

Inspirational book 14 Mar 2009
Format:Hardcover
As a source book this has to be one of the best. Using examples from National Trust properties this is sumptuously illustrated and is bound to inspire your creativity. The patterns are grouped under various headings and there is an emphasis on the Arts and Crafts Movement. This book is a must for students of surface pattern design & textiles but is a beautiful book in it's own right.
