Product Description

Product Description

Since the first edition was published in 1980, Metric Pattern Cutting for Menswear has become established as the standard work on this subject and has proved invaluable as both a textbook for students and a reference source for the practising designer.

In this fifth edition, the chapter on computer aided design now has full colour illustrations and reflects the growing importance of CAD to the industry and as a part of fashion and design courses. The rest of the book has been updated where necessary: in particular, new blocks for tailored shirts, new details on how to adapt men’s blocks for women’s wear, and a revision of sizing and labelling information. Colour is now used to differentiate the main groups of patterns and with its tried and tested layout with clear text and diagrams, Metric Pattern Cutting for Menswear is an essential purchase for students of fashion and design.

Not for beginners 8 Jun 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have been sewing for years however had not made my own patterns in a very long time. After attending a refresher course I purchased this book, the price was right compared to the older editions. I must say compared to her older editions I do like this book Winifred has mentioned that she has incorporated 1cm seam allowance in her blocks, which is up to you to decide to cut it off if you are not used to working with allowances. Personally I leave them on and then if I need to add extra when drafting my patterns, a lot of ppl including tutors have complained in the past. This books also takes into consideration the changes in the industry re types of fabrics generally used today and the use of CAD Cam technology.

Albeit I think the book is ok I have found a few errors in her process and I will put that down to typing error. I don't think that I would recommend this book to a complete beginner as Winifred assumes the reader is fully competent in pattern cutting. Thank goodness for my refresher course!

After spending my time getting my BA in Fashion design i found that i was unable to create patterns only deform them, it presents the the lack of care at Uni. So spent the money to buy this book to help me along it is a bit hard to follow but something that before long will get the hang of. It's a fantastic teacher and allows you to take more control of creating patterns. It's a book worth having as it allows you the understanding of creating a pattern therefore not having to be dependent on buying overpriced pattern pieces that will more then likely be a bad fit.

I've just started doing menswear this year so bought this book to help me with pattern cutting. I have the womenswear one which is pretty much the same; very detailed and precise. It will definitely help when doing those pesky double and single breasted mens blazers!
