Product Description

From the Back Cover

This unique book has become established as the standard work on the subject since it was first published in 1990. It contains a full range of blocks and patterns to cope with all aspects of lingerie, beachwear and leisurewear. Not only the methods of cutting are explained but also the reasoning behind them so that the information can be applied and adapted to other situations.

The new edition includes tips for achieving the best results when taking measurements, optimum fit patterns for close fitting garments, and outstanding patterns for larger cup sizes.

About the Author

Ann Haggar has taught extensively at degree level using her wide industrial experience. She has also written two fashion supplements for the classic books Dress Pattern Designing and More Dress Pattern Designing, both by Natalie Bray.

I just received this book and I am pretty pleased with my purchase. Each building block, (and they mean a "sleeve", or a "skirt", or a "neglige", etc are blocks) are given detailed attention in terms of how to take measurements, and how to create the pattern and make some variations and combinations of blocks. There are also some higher level descriptions such as fabric suggestions, finishings, and other important things to think about.
I would not call the lingerie patterns "sexy", but they are so generic that anyone with some imagination and creative "freedom" should be able to adapt them into whatever they want them to be. There are no photographs, only simple scetches of the finished garments, and as such may not be very inspiring. I plan to get a book on lingerie to keep on the side for visual inspiration myself, and look to Haggar's book for the instructions on how to make them.
This is not for beginners, even if the instructions are detailed.

This book is for the person that really knows their stuff. It is informative but not for the beginner. Also some of the styles of the garments are a bit old fashioned and not something that I would make. Would be quite a good book to get some basic tips from if you could expand and add your own designs in.

This book is very good for ongoing fashion students or anyone who has had basic experience in pattern cutting and has the time to go through and follow the steps towards creating the basic blocks (bodice, trouser, skirt, etc.) which are then your basis for creating bras, panties, swimwear, slips, teddies, nighties, etc...Once you know the basics already, this book is quite thorough with explaining how to get to the next step in whatever type of lingerie you are trying to make. This book was recommended to me by a designer I interned with and since he makes amazing stuff I figured this may be a good buy. So far I am not disappointed and it is going for a good price on Amazon so I would recommend purchasing it!!! However please remember that if you have absolutely no idea what pattern cutting is this book may seem a bit confusing and you might have to spend time learning a bit of the terms/shorthands and rules that the author uses to describe the processes, before you can efficiently make the patterns.Other than that a good relatively reasonable investment!

Format: Paperback
This book has a good selection of different pattern blocks to use for your own designs, with tips on how to adapt them. However, i have been using the instructions to draft a bodice block to adapt into a pattern for a bra and there seems to be an error when drafting according to size 8 measurements- either there is a typo in the drafting instructions, a mistake in the measurement tables or size 8s are just resigned to a very strangely shaped bodice block! I have double and tripled checked my steps, calculations and measurements and can't seem to resolve the problem so i can only deduce that the problem must lie with the publication. Has anyone else had this problem?

Some more clear indication of seam allowances (which aren't included) and finishings such as bindings, ties etc. would have been a great help. It is a good reference book for the advanced user.

I love this book, most of the blocks and adapted blocks are really great. However this book has one huge flaw the bust line on the bodice block is invariable too high often by more than an inch I've tried it on many people and it never fits right. On the other hand the skirt block is one of the best around.

Great! Just what I needed. Trained to degree level but not made blocks before - this was perfect to get me restarted after a 5 year lul in Pattern Cutting.

Really nice book, some very good ideas for creative lingerie making etc, some styles slightly outdated but interesting. And fun nonetheless
