The world of Orla Kiely is one where pattern reigns.

Immediately recognisable, her unique design language and sure sense of graphic control has seen her label become a hugely successful global brand in the decade since its launch.

From her early signature bags, the collection has grown to include a complete womenswear line, accessories, travel and homeware, sold in shops and outlets worldwide.
Giving a personal account of what informs her work and inspires her designs, Orla looks at pattern in all its manifestations - the impact of scale and proportion, rhythm and texture and the all-important dimension of colour.

With her prints applied to a wide range of products, from bags and clothing to decorative objects and soft furnishings, she is in a unique position to comment on all the ways in which pattern can enrich our lives.

Illustrated with many examples of Orla's work, along with inspirational images that have shaped her style, the result is both a visual treasury and a thoughtful guide to using pattern with flair and confidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone 11 Jun 2011
Whether you're new to Orla Kiely, or are a die-hard fan; this book has something for anyone with an interest in pattern, textiles, design or just things that look lovely in the home. At first, I thought the (huge!) book might just be a visual collection of her work, with some captions; something to flick through on your coffee table. However, this book delves much deeper into the entire length of Kiely's career so far.

Split into 6 chapters - Life, Inspiration, Colour, Print, Collections and Home - this book charts Kiely's early years, from her idyllic upbringing in Ireland, through to the tentative early stages of her career, into exciting moments such as when she started branching out beyond print and bags into womenswear. You get the sense that she was born to follow this path; every page is inspirational for any budding (or seasoned!) designer. In fact, flicking through, dipping in and out, I was left extremely motivated and inspired to pursue my own dreams as she has so steadfastly - she is a real inspiration.

The balance of text and image is perfect; enough detail about her life and her business to make you read well into the night (as I did), but also pages and pages of full colour reproductions of her glorious prints and products, that you could just as well ignore the text and just enjoy the riot of colour and pattern.

If I could criticise the book at all, it would be that I would like to have seen more examples of how she begins new projects; sketches, ideas etc. There are a few pages (namely pages 106, 112, 241) where we see snippets of colour swatches stuck into sketchbooks and the like, but I for one would love to see early sketches of her beautiful finished patterns.

5.0 out of 5 stars An original designer 19 Jan 2012
Orla Kiely is an orginal: Irish, female, anti-loud and cheap fashion designer. She tells her story from her Dublin childhood, her textile studies in London, international experience in the fashion industry to the launch of her own products and success. This book is exceedingly interesting not only for the stories it tells, but also for its content of pages upon pages of 60's inspired patterns and great designs. A great source book and a true inspiration for aspiring textile and fashion designers who aren't into throw-away fashion. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat misleading... 1 April 2012
I bought this book, heavily discounted, from The Book People, and, even so, I feel a bit cheated. The title is "Pattern", but the thing that has struck me most about the book is how little pattern there is. In fact, there's an awful lot of text, and most of that isn't about the patterns but a life history. I don't have a problem with that per se, but it would have been nice if that had been reflected in the title, so it could have given a better and more accurate idea of what the book was truly about.

I would also say that another, quite revealing, feature of the book is just how repetitive the patterns are - talk about flogging a dead horse (and such grim, dull 70s colours - it was like reliving my childhood!)! Perhaps the purpose of the text is to distract from this. Having been through the book it is now quite tempting to say that this is a prime example of The Emperor's New Clothes.

Another reviewer has wondered whether the lack of patterns is to help prevent copyright infringement, but this is something that has not prevented Cath Kidston from including patterns for copying in her books "Sew!", "Patch!" and "Make!".

The one thing that the book has in its favour is the gorgeous textured cover, which makes it enormously tactile and wonderful to handle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Biography come design bible 2 Oct 2010
As a Huge Orla fan, I admit i was wondering what this book would be like. I thought it'd be simply a catalogue of her work, with little writing.

Having Orla prints in ever room of our house, I was thinking I had nothing new to see, however I love the honesty in this book, and the delicate writing about her up bringing.

Orla, if your reading this, you should be very proud, yet again- you've nailed it. As with everything you do.

A must!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 17 Dec 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a fantastic book. I bought it as a present to myself, but it would make a great gift for anyone who loves pattern and design. Orla Kiely's products have always tempted me - I love her retro take on things - and this book explains her history and thought process in a thorough but very easy to read and follow dialogue. The pictures are wonderful too! It's on my coffee table and even though I've read it from cover to cover, I still go back to it again and again.
