Product Description

Product Description

Pavement-maker Libertus, a former slave who is now a Roman citizen, is not entirely surprised to witness a stabbing near the chariot race ground in bustling Corinium (modern Cirencester). Luckily the victim, the wealthy decurion Quintus Ulpius, has a personal physician on hand and tragedy is averted. Commanded by his patron Marcus Septimus to investigate the attack, Libertus arrives at Quintus's mansion only moments before the decurion is knifed again, this time fatally. When one of Quintus's enemies is found with bloodstains on his toga, for Marcus the case is closed. But Libertus is not at all convinced the solution is that simple. When a second body is found, he knows he must act fast before other lives are threatened - including his own.

Libertus the Pavement Maker returns in the second of Rosemary Rowe's novels on Roman Britain set in the second century AD.
Libertus is a witness to a stabbing on the streets of Corinium (modern day Cirencester). Luckily for the victim a physician is hand and a tragedy is averted. However Libertus is commanded by his wealthy patron Marcus Septimus to investigate the attack. This is no where near the end of the matter and Libertus soon becomes embroiled in another case of murder and intrigue. These books are well researched and the storytelling is excellent. I commend them to you.

This is part two of the Libertus mysteries set in Britain.
Libertus, pavement-maker in Glevum, sets out with his Patron and boss Marcus Aurelius Septimus to Corinium (now Cirencester) to investigate the murder of Decurion Quintus Ulpius.
For the Roman Citizen Septimus of Glevum (now Gloucester), who works for the governer of Britain Pertinax and therefore for Commodus the Roman Emperor, everything seems straightforward about the guilt of one man, but for Libertus (and his assistant pavement-maker/investigator Junio) the Pattern of Blood is much more of a puzzle and therefore needs careful planning and investigations before he can solve this murder in the end.
The story has a labyrinth of twists and turns and in the end Libertus finds the real culprit of this murder.
A recommendation to everyone who likes to read Roman mysteries!
