Another way of considering espionage, 10 May 2007
This review is from: The Patriots [DVD] [2006] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
1983. A 18-year-old Frenchman, Ariel Brenner successes in joining Mossad, Israeli secret services. Having become a spy for Israel, he will see his family again 4 years later, after the loss of many illusions.
This long film of 2h30 is cut in three parts : Ariel's training in Mossad gives an outline of the methods of recruitment and of training of the modern secret services. Follow then two missions, in which participle Ariel, that are inspired by two genuine scandals : the destruction of the nuclear power station of Osirak ( 1981 ) and the treason of Jonathan Pollard, an American agent of the NSA, for the benefit of Israel.
It should be said straight away : we are far here from James Bond or Alias here. Although the intrigue is romanticized, there is on behalf of Eric Rochant a will of realism notably close of Melville's cinema. The rhythm of the film is slow, the tension is constant, the reasons of state are everywhere. The actors are remarkable too. Yvan Attal reminds young Al Pacino and Sandrine Kiberlain bursts the screen by her fragility, elegance and seduction. The music, as for it, is stabbing and sticks perfectly on the film, whether it is Asturia or original composition of Gérard Torikian.
Is Mossad presented in a fantasized, caricatural way? It is not what says about it Frédéric Encel, a Doctor in geopolitics, during a fascinating 20 mn interview present in the supplements. Besides the cut scenes (uneven interest), we find on this second DVD a 52 mn documentary in which participate the producer, the director and the main actors of the film.
Few things are missing so that this big film is a master piece, in my opinion : maybe the end is a little faulty, maybe that the allusions are not rather explicit in the first vision. It doesn't much matter : we take pleasure to plunge into the blackness of the Patriots and we guess that this pleasure will repeat, even will increase as we shall see it again. The best reason to acquire it, after all.
