Along with "Scardino", Walsh's book is a readily accessible assist for the legion of laymen afflicted with prostatic cancer. While to some (those of us who have a degree of understanding - if not the Latin - of medical and surgical terminology) it may appear somewhat chatty and condescending, in his work Walsh demonstrates why he is widely accepted as one of the leading lights in this complex field. One quickly realizes that medicine is not an exact science, the consequences of which continue to lead to unnecessarily delayed treatment of this widespread disease. The reader is accompanied through the various stages of the condition, from screening, diagnosis and initial therapies - radiation and surgery - for prostatic cancer, to the much more serious challenges of persistent and recurrent (metastatic) disease. The text is well presented, as one would expect of a book now in its third edition, and by an author writing his fifth book on prostatic cancer. Investigative and experimental therapies for the terminally ill are also discussed. The cold horror of "successful" drugs, which can extend the life of patients with metastatic complications by some months, at (disproportionately?) great financial cost, is also outlined.
In a corner of medicine still plagued by the minefields of "observant waiting" (in case you manage to die of something else before your cancer gets you!), Walsh succeeds in presenting an impartial and dispassionate treatise on a scourge which is reckoned to afflict 60% of men over 60, and constitutes one of the main causes of male deaths in developed nations.
This book belongs in the hands of all these men before it is too late......

This book covers every aspect of prostate cancer starting with an excellent explanation of the anatomy of the gland and progressing onto the diagnosis and treatment.
I have prostate cancer and found that my local urologist to be badly informed about the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.
The subtitle to the book is "Give Yourself a Second Opinion". This is exactly what I did and have transferred my treatment to another hospital
This is a must buy book for anyone who has anything to do with prostate cancer and that includes practicing urologists, GPs and spouses

What is the very best you could possibly expect from a book on Prostate cancer? I ask the question because if you share my interest in this, you either have this dis-ease or are closely connected to someone who has it or you have become involved in this area as a medic or surgical/ nursing specialist.
The very best I could expect would be a flow chart which outlines every single possibility for everyone. So that includes all possible scenarios, all possible cures and/or palliative treatments, so that you and I would know at any stage what the prospects are and what alternative treatments are available. Plus I would like it if the book explained what support might be available and useful to help deal with issues like depression, physical pain, and how to feel positive!
That is a very tall order. But I think Dr. Walsh’s book gets as close to it as is humanly possible without getting too bogged down in controversy, particularly in making judgements about surgery vs radiotherapy and (in later stages) hormone therapy, alternative/complementary medecines and new drug treatments.
You (or the one you care for) are probably somewhere in this flow chart. I’m quite far down it, but I’m quite optimistic. Whatever stage you are at, it will explain well what the options are and what, on balance, is best for you.
