Format:Hardcover
Acknowledged to be the most brilliant of a brilliant generation, and - though not a poet - renowned for the poem he wrote which was found after his death "I saw a man this morning/ Who did not wish to die...", this long overdue biography absolutely lived up to the expectations set by the flyer:

"What PATRICK SHAW STEWART, AN EDWARDIAN METEOR so brilliantly evokes is the final flush of the Edwardian aristocracy before its sudden immersion in the realities of war... ... But war tranformed them, cutting through the carapace of cynicism and privilege behind which they often hid."

This to me is the essence of this book - the sharp contrast between the hugely privileged lives of this group of friends, sprinkled with well-known names (eg Winston Churchill, Rupert Brooke etc) with the stark reality of war, a contrast which they are able to articulate even as they lost friends.
The author achieves a good balance between telling the story, and quoting the source letters written between the friends to give a real insight into the ways in which these friends thought and lived and loved.

A powerful reminder of what might have been, had so many of this generation not been mown down in the 1st World War.
