A book of some genius, 6 Oct 2008
This review is from: Patrick Ferguson: 'A Man of Some Genius' (Paperback)
Gilchrist's biography of Patrick Ferguson is well worth a look. Previously I had only read a small amount about Ferguson and knew little about him except for his tragic, though heroic, death and the fact that he designed one of the first breech loading military rifles used to fight the American Rebellion. This account draws a convincing picture of this brave and influential soldier, including a large amount of background detail for his family, and refers to his own letters. Gilchrist has clearly carried out extensive research and I was surprised that so many of Ferguson's letters have survived, which have been put to very good use here.
While the book excels regarding the Ferguson family history and makes great use of primary sources, I would have liked to have seen a longer technical description of the famed Ferguson rifle and of the Battle of King's Mountain. However, this account does reveal that Ferguson was an officer of many talents and a true pioneer of light infantry tactics. The fact that he was seriously involved in training and leading American Loyalists, in common with Banastre Tarleton, was quite a revelation to me. He was also an officer who led by example and was wounded in action on two occsasions. I was surprised that he designed an experimental cannon, which he took to America to test in the field, and gained some experience in building fortifiations. Added to this, he wrote against the acts of pillaging that took place on both sides and expressed a desire to ensure the fair treatment of civilians.
This is a well written and informative book that clearly benefits from careful research. It is also well supported with photographic illustrations and some useful family trees (a great aid for understanding family history). It is particularly strong in examining the character and background of this 18th century soldier and is a must for anyone interested in the American War of Independence.
