not such a nice read 12 July 2010
By jd52
Format:Paperback
you can definately judge this book by its cover! not alot of pictures, diagrams or tables inside, everything is in black and white, there are pages of countless text, some of the information goes overboard and it was a hard time reading through this book, for the positive points the book does go through the basic physiology before explaining the pathophysiological mechansisms of disease which is helpful, some topics such a myelin disorders (multiple sclerosis) were not mentioned in the book, but overall my rating is so low because this book wasnt so appealing, there is a newer edition out, lets hope that has more diagrams and colourful pictures.

essential 19 Nov 2007
By Dr.D
Format:Paperback
This book is great with a very wide range of material and plenty of detail, and should serve as an excellent reference for medical students getting to grips with new conditions; as pathophysiology serves as a bridge between basic science and clinical medicine, this book should be read before delving into something like kumar & clarke. (As the title suggests...)

I used the 4th edition, I'm sure the 5th will be even better.

The only downsides are the total lack of colour pictures throughout (even in the dermatology chapter!!), and that the reader is often confronted with page after page of small print text. That said however, the material is full of golden nuggets and the illustrations have hopefully been improved in the new edition.

Buy it and pass your exams.

Too skimpy 14 Feb 2007
By Dr. D - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book has too little information for a med student, even in first or second year. A few areas are relatively well covered, but it's neither basic enough to be used as a learning tool nor detailed enough to be used as a reference. I use it once in a while, but only in conjuction with Harrison's, UptoDate, and other such references. You'll still need to go back to a Pathololgy and a Physiology text to find what you're looking for.

Good info, just hard to find. 18 Sep 2010

It is hard to locate topics and information in this format. I would pay extra for an easier content locator. The content is complete and informational though. Its an okay purchase.

Lacks structure, lacks editing, lacks everything. 25 April 2008
By JMTG - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is the benchmark of bad textbooks. I refuse to believe the text ever saw an editor before it went into print; the authors - especially McPhee himself - wouldn't be able to recognize DIDACTICS if it came flying into his face; the text is extremely convulted written, confusing, unstructured, concepts are never connected, void of clarity, and in many instances just straight out wrong or self-contradictory; the book has no intention of actually conveying knowledge, instead it keeps digging into itself.

Also, do not believe the other reviewers who give this book 5 stars, they are not actual persons, but agencies paid by the publishers. Or, as I cannot actually attest to that, suffice to say anyone taking medical didactics seriously simply cannot reward this book 5 stars.
