Book Description

6 Dec 2011 Pathfinder Tales
Nobody cheats death. A warrior haunted by his past, Salim Ghadafar serves as a problem-solver for a church he hates, bound by the goddess of death to hunt down those who would rob her of her due. Such is the case in the desert nation of Thuvia, where a powerful merchant on the verge of achieving eternal youth via a magical elixir is mysteriously murdered, his soul kidnapped somewhere along its path to the afterlife. The only clue is a magical ransom note, offering to trade the merchant's successful resurrection for his dose of the fabled potion. But who would have the power to steal a soul from the boneyard of Death herself? Enter Salim, whose keen mind and contacts throughout the multiverse should make solving this mystery a cinch. There''s only one problem: The investigation is being financed by Neila Anvanory, the dead merchant''''s stubborn and aristocratic daughter. And she wants to go with him. Along with his uninvited passenger, Salim must unravel a web of intrigue that will lead them far from the blistering sands of Thuvia on a grand tour of the Outer Planes, where devils and angels rub shoulders with fey lords and mechanical men, and nothing is as it seems...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Pathfinder Tales offerings! 5 Dec 2011
By Joseph Anthony Mandato - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I've gleefully consumed all of the Pathfinder Tales to date, and Death's Heretic is easily one of the most enjoyable reads. Sutter is a masterful writer. His enigmatic main character Salim is very well developed - I was really drawn in as I learned more and more about his history and personality as the novel unfolded. While the plot is a planes-hopping romp through exotic locales, Salim's strong characterization and the central mystery of the story keep the reader grounded. Sutter did a great job of making Thuvia (the country much of the novel is set in)feel like its own distinct country - the story truly felt like it was set in the world of Golarion, rather than some generic fantasy-land. I'm really looking forward to Salim's continuing adventures. One note for readers who might not be familiar with the world the novel is set in - there is a glossary in the back, so if a term, name or location confuses you, just give it a quick glance!

5.0 out of 5 stars He serves, but does not worship... 30 Nov 2011
By Andrew Zimmerman Jones - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a great fantasy adventure story, with a main character who really draws you in. Salim Ghadafar serves the goddess Pharasma, the Lady of Graves, but it's clear from moments into the book that Salim has no particular love for her. He serves her, but does not worship her. The unraveling of his backstory is one of the major parts of the novel, so I won't get into it.

His current mission is to investigate a soul that has been stolen from Pharasma's Boneyard in the afterlife ... a theft which should not be possible. The investigation draws him close to Neila, the daughter of the man who's gone missing. He can't be resurrected until his soul is reclaimed. The quest takes Salim and Neila across dimensions to confront beings that predate Creation itself, giving a great exploration of the worlds that comprise the Pathfinder game setting.

Looking for a great fantasy adventure? This is it. Looking for a compelling character? This has it. Looking for a philosophically rich exploration of the relevance of gods and worship? This has that, too.

The book works on all levels and is highly recommended to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant addition to the Pathfinder universe. 27 Nov 2011
By C. J. Ovalle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is terrific. I know that I, and I assume others, have thought about one of the central beliefs of the main character of this book- deities exist in the fantasy world, but are they beings worthy of worship? The protagonist serves the goddess of death while despising the concept of divine worship. Salim is a compelling character, and his motivations and history are one of the most interesting parts of the overall story, which is fun in its own right. Although the subject of atheism might make some uncomfortable (as some forum threads on the Paizo board have demonstrated), I think Sutter handles it quite well, which was a relief.

The plot is entertaining- a murder mystery in a world where resurrection and immortality are possible. The protagonist and his companion, Neila, have a great deal of work to do to solve the mystery of her father's death, and must travel to some truly exotic places to move the mystery forward.

The book is an excellent introduction to Golarian and the wider Pathfinder universe. I have a passing familiarity with the world, but no great in-depth knowledge. The characters introduced offer some great examples of how different persons from varied countries, cultures, and planes behave and interact, and more impressively in a way that is completely at place in the story.
