Book Description

1 Feb 2007 Pathfinder Guide (Book 1)
This collection of walks complements Pathfinder Dartmoor, an area acclaimed as the last great wilderness in Britain. The haunting beauty of the central moorland studded with old tin mines and one of Britain's highest concentrations of historic remains is explored on several routes through the national park, including those passing Vixen Tor, one of the tallest and most distinctive granite tors on Dartmoor, Princetown and Buckfastleigh Moor. However, there are also explorations of the hills, river valleys and picturesque villages of the surrounding countryside the South Hams and south-east Devon, and especially the spectacular coastline.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for walking. 25 April 2002
By A Customer
This book, like all pathfinder guides split the walks into length and ease. Because of this, you will always be able to find a walk that suits your circumstances. A brief description allows you to choose what type of walk you would like, i.e. forest, river or moor land, and it also gives hints of when is best to attempt the walk, i.e. Spring, dry weather etc. Most of the walks are well described, so they are easy to follow, but beware however, of the countryside changing. All in all a varied book, that allows you to explore the area. If you are holidaying in this area it would be a good accessory for the rucksack!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bring an ordinance survey map! 26 July 2004
By MrShev
Great ideas, good maps, bad directions. If you follow the directions you will get lost - better to follow the maps, use a compass and go that way. Frequently the directions got me lost, but it's still a great way to see Dartmoor. Also, some of the descriptions of the walks as 'suitable for children and inexperienced walkers...' are frankly laughable! One of so-described walks was 10 miles over hard, rugged country and open moor...even in summer was an effort for me and some pretty experienced walkers - pity any children that are dragged on that one!

4.0 out of 5 stars good book - maps a little too small 12 Nov 2010
By mary
As a person who likes walking but moves very often with my job - i have used these books a few times to get me out and about to see some well known walks and areas. I find they are great as well if you are on holidays somewhere for a week as they contain the OS maps as well. In this book, i found that alot of the walks start in really charming villages but the amount of detail on how to get the right path out of the village isnt good enough and the maps are too small for you to be able to navigate using them alone. maybe adding a little detailed map of urban areas might be a good idea
