5.0 out of 5 stars Good for the tabletop; great for info on the MMO 13 April 2013
By J. Gypton - Published on Amazon.com
I received this book a few months ago as part of the Kickstarter rewards for the MMO. I don't play MMOs; however I supported the KS out of a desire to support the overall game, and (shamelessly) to get an autographed book. Anyway, it's great if you want to introduce an interesting setting in a relatively out of the way corner of Golarion into your tabletop campaign - that is, a backwoods area of the already backwoods River Kingdoms. The locale has a backstory that makes sense and would enable a campaign to either start there or go there. The NPCs add value to the setting, fitting well into the story. And the adventure locations are varied, although mostly low (5th and below) level. Overall, it's something I could see myself using to either flesh out a corner of an area near our existing Kingmaker campaign, or as a springboard for an entirely new story.

As for the MMO enthusiast, the pictures of and information about the goals, timeline, and processes behind that effort are explained at the end of the book, and I think would be really useful and interesting to fans of such games. Additionally, it blends well with the story and system material for the tabletop game, thus presenting an MMO player with an easy route into the tabletop world, or vice versa. Overall, I think this book is a great example of writing, organization, and story. And it's well worth the Amazon price, as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Well written RPG campaign setting, but limited information about Pathfinder Online 29 April 2013
By Charles - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Although the title suggests this book is for Pathfinder Online, it actually is a very well written campaign setting for the Pathfinder RPG. There are discussions of plans for launching Pathfinder Online in the future (optomistically in mid-2014) and indications that Thornkeep may be one of the starting locations; however, much more current and detailed information is on the Goblin Works blog.

The Thornkeep campaign setting is comprised of several modules (levels) which provide detailed and enteratining information for a number of locations, NPC and monsters with references to the Pathfinder Core Rulebook and Pathfinder Beastiary. With minor tweaking the campaign setting could be used for other popular games, such as DND 3.5. The levels were written by different talented dungeon designers in support of a Kickstarter project to fund a technology demo for Pathfinder Online. As a result, the tone of the descriptions changes as the players advance through the locations. However, the modules meshed into a coherent environment so I found it easy to run the entire book as an integrated campaign. I did find the last level not quite enough of a challenge for characters able to survive the preceeding levels, but a simple increase in the number or level of some monsters made the level's difficulty perfect for the players.

Overall, I was very pleased with the book. Although I had some reservations about the approach of combining designs from several designers into a single campaign, it resulted in a campaign environment that seemed to continually refresh itself so players' interest and suspense never lagged.

A mixed bag, not as well tied together as I had hoped.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great little starter town. 21 May 2013

Haven't ran it with a group yet, but it seems like a great starter town - especially if you need a group to stay in one general area for awhile. It would have been nice to get some grid maps of the non-dungeon areas, but you can only do so much. The behind the scenes look at the online game is a nice bonus.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great teaser for the online game 7 May 2013
By Primebuyer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The material was well written and interesting, giving the background for the area in which the online game will be set and also telling us how the online game is being developed. The development process is very interesting and the sneak peeks at the art and game mechanics are keeping my interest in the project alive. Can't wait for the actual game to be live.
